Summary

I just played Diablo for the first time (Aug. 2004). I wish I had played it much earlier before playing great games like Morrowind and the Baldur's Gate series. Then I would be able to appreciate it as the classic that many have claimed it to be. Anyhow, I found this game very entertaining from start to finish. It was easy to learn to play, suspenseful, and I didn't notice any bugs (which is a real surprise for games nowadays). I am glad that I finally got around to playing this and will definitely be playing Diablo 2 (plus LoD) next. For anyone who hasn't played Diablo yet, it's definitely worth a look. However, don't expect it to rival games like Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights in complexity, options, gameplay, or anything else. Again, it's good old hack-and-slay arcade action with a pinch of role-playing thrown in.

Sound

It has a great soundtrack, especially once you're in the dungeon. The voice acting is pretty good and the other sound effects help build atmosphere.

Gameplay

Most of the time you'll be clicking the mouse to move, attack, pick up things, and open menus. There is really nothing difficult to learn. I personally was not bothered by all of the clicking as long as the fights were challenging. During the first few levels, my figher had no problems even when faced by a mob of enemies. However, by the 7 or 8 level, I had to fight more strategically since the monsters had become much more difficult to beat. By the 12th level, you'll have to draw enemies away from their groups and fight them one at a time. The end fight was appropriately difficult, but not as insanely challenging as the final fights in Baldur's Gate 2. One really great thing about this game is that each time you start a new game the dungeon levels are redrawn and new monsters, treasure, traps, and other things are generated. I really can't see playing this game again since there are so many better games out there right now. However, I like this formula which allows for a tremendous degree of replayability. There were a few things I didn't care for, but they are all together minor. First, this is not primarily a role-playing game, so it is unfair to criticize it for not being more like Baldur's Gate and other RPGs. Diablo is mainly an arcade-style action adventure with some limited role-playing possibilities. You can only choose between 3 classes (fighter, sorceror, or rogue); your stats are preset, although you can control how points are allocated between abilities during the game; and NPC interaction is very limited and more or less restricted to trading and quest-giving. Also, the town itself is small and static, and your character cannot carry much in his/her inventory (which will ensure many visits to town for supplies). However, in the dungeon itself, you do get the sense that you are surrounded by evil, and there is a good amount of suspense as you get closer to the end.

Summary

Add me to the list of gamers that think this title was quite overhyped. I understand that it was developed in 1997, but the game's flaws have nothing to do with the graphics being outdated. In fact, I enjoyed the artwork and sound of the game. The problem is that this game is a dungeon crawl with no storyline or depth. Some people enjoy that type of game and that's fine, but I can't understand why it received all the accolades that it did. And yes, I will also point out that this game is NOT an RPG (sorry to be yet another person who raises this argument). The previous reviewer said that this game couldn't be classified as an RPG, action, or adventure title. Well, he got the RPG part right... It's basically a third person action game with fantasy elements and an extremely simple (even for 1997) combat model.

Sound

I remember reading an article once that claimed the death cries of some of the monsters were a bit gratuitous. I thought the sound effects and music were the high points of the game. Blizzard has its artwork and atmosphere down in this game, they should just focus on creating a compelling story (one that we discover while playing the game, instead of reading the whole thing in the manual) and sharpening the combat elements when they start work on the inevitable Diablo 3. Perhaps the Diablo team should play Knights of the Old Republic before kicking off their next project.

Gameplay

As stated above, it's a dungeon crawl pure and simple. It's true that not everyone wants to play a deep game such as Baldur's Gate, but Diablo is rather bland even as a simple action game. If you choose the fighter class, (as I'm guessing most people will) the combat consists of walking over to monsters and clicking on them. That's it. No defense, no strategy, no significant NPCs, nothing. The game really shines as something that you play for an hour or two when you get home from work/school, but I felt it definitely lacked that critical immersive element.

Sound

The Sound is great. From beasts of Hell howling in the night to you bashing thier skulls open the game sounds great.

OVERALL
================
This game is well worth the ten bucks it costs about anywhere. Smooth Gameplay, OK Graphics, and Good Replay Value(due to three classes).

Gameplay

As I described Earlier the purpose of this game is to get to the bottom of hell and kill Diablo a.k.a. Satan. It is mainly a point and click as in Click to bash crap out of your foes, drink potions, cast spells, buy, sell, talk, walk, open chests, and about anything else you can imagine. While sounding simplistic it is good for people with less of a reaction time as they are not flipping through the manual for the right button to press. In the game you play as either a Rouge(Archer), Warrior(Meelee), or Sorcerer(Spell Slinger). All classes are unige and fun to play. I suggest playing the game through 3 times (once with each character) to get all you can from the replay value. Online play is fun and intuitive if you play with the right people. I.E. Don't play with people you know cheat or if you find out they do boot thier buts out of the server. People like that ruin the fun of venturing into dungeons. If you are a cheater reading this please don't for it ruins the fun for others.

Sound

sound was ok and spooky at times and it was the best part of the game.thats a sad thing when the best part of a game is its sound.

overall: i dont understand all the hype to this day about this game but this is a over glorified game made by a manufacturer that nomatter what they put out people will like it because of starcraft,im sorry this game is on my stinky list its just flatout boring

Gameplay

This game literally bored me to death after i got through the 4th dungeon. All you do is go deeper and deeper in a hole in the earth and every level looks the same.different shaped dungeon levels but the texture is all the same and is very boring for me in that respect.I feel out of all the games that have ever been over hyped this is the biggest one.Everyone praises blizzard so much because of starcraft and now everything that they come out with now people are blind to the fact that most of all the blizzard games have no creativity to them.they are followers of past games they never comeout with anything new or ground breaking.like warcraft 3 for instance blizzard will claim the hero is a new thing when in reality warlords battlecry 2 came out with a hero for there game in 1999,and was implemented much better then warcraft 3.getting back to diablo the lack of options was another big let down.im sorry even know the game is old now there were better games then this even before this came out.

Sound

i don't remember much about the sound, but i think that i liked it just fine. perhaps on the repetitive side, but that is to be expected.

Gameplay

pure, mindless "fun". strategy? nope. there isn't much strategy in going into a room loaded with skeletons and clicking really fast while moving around a bit. if it gets too hairy, then leave the room and drink a potion. yawn. please demand more to a game than this tripe. i'm not going out of my way like this just to be "the controversial guy" - this is my honest assessment of the game. think how stupid X-com would look if you just ran a bunch of guys off the ship in real-time and started smacking around the bad guys willy-nilly. what a joke. the heart and soul of the game would be gone. this game is for the ADD instant gratification set. and that is fine. not every game has to be challenging to the mind.
hack, hack, hack *ka-ching!* money bags from the sky! hack, hack, hack *pop!* potions from the sky. repeat 10,000 times.

Sound

The voices are quite effective as they speak, they show great emotion and realistic mannerisms. All conversations are scrolled from top to bottom on the screen and some are recorded. The background music of each level adds to mood of the game, bass with slightly rumbling instruments.

Gameplay

I'd rank gameplay as over average. I've played black and white or other graphically limited versions of RPG games like this, and I found this game actually quite easy. You begin in town where you can converse or haggle with handful of stationary townsfolk. Conversations are quite entertaining and add suspense to the storyline. This is where you can buy your equipment for battle. The very few journeys down into Hell are particularly tricky, as you are a mere novice and must be careful. However, I found the warrior class to have greater advantage than other classes, as I do in most games. The warrior has enough strength to use basic and intermediate weapons, while the Sorcerer is quite weak and cannot lift more than his magical staff. The warrior, unlike in most similar games, is able to actually use magic. He is no sorcerer, but with a good weapon, a little magic on the side makes him quite powerful. Magic in this game requires mana and to replenish mana is quite bothersome, as you must buy specific potions and then venture back into the dungeon. The sideplots make the game quite interesting, but over-all the game is not that difficult. During some battles, you must have some strategy to avoid mob attacks and to beat powerful beasts. The game, there are powerful and common tools and equipment in the game that, after a quick defeat of a boss man, will make you almost semi-powerful. Weapons, equipment, and magic wear off almost instantaneously, and only the warrior is able to repair weapons and armor. The game has 4 traits, strength, magic, stealth, and constitution, and as the game progresses, you can increase these traits as your character increases in level. However, a class has limitations, as a warrior cannot excel after certain extent in magic, as a sorcerer cannot excel after extent in strength. Some demons and monsters are difficult to beat, especially in packs, and clearing a whole room of monsters is sometimes unrewarding althought necessary. One grudge I have against this game is the little amount of space in your backpack, and you have no way of moving objects around, so a sword that can only fit 6 horizontal squares, where you might have 6 vertical squares, you can't rotate the item. However, what is peculiar, you can leave an object in a dungeon level and find it the exact same place next time, which makes the game much easier.

Summary

I bought this game about 3 years ago and play it atleast once aweak and when im not playing this im playing starcraft (another AWSOME game by Blizzard).

Well anywayz blizzard has it all right with this game, i don't know about the new warcraft games but if u have an extra ten bucks put it into this game cuz its worth about x100 times more then that and it's simpler the diablo 2 (i personally like this more then diablo2, but dont take me wrong i LOVE diablo 2), it has a simpler interface, it, while being shorter is much harder and provides more challange when in the dungeon. Multiplayer is great except for the fact that it can be easy to cheat which most people dont fail to do.

The graphics? well since thsi game was released almost 5 years ago now i guess their great. But now they have become old. But i still wouldnt go crazy over them they are only slightly worse then diablo 2 and u can easily depict the differance between units.

i hope diablo 2 fans have not taken offfense to this review, i love diablo 2 also.

Sound

Again, really cool. Again, not groundbreaking or next-gen. Just cool. Goth music, monster sounds, voices, grunts, plinks, and whatnot. Really moody. And Cool.

Gameplay

Point and click. You want to move, you click where you want to move. You want to attack someone, you click on them. A monkey with an anurism could master this game. True, all this clicking can give you carpal tunnel syndrome, but so can certain magazines, and I think Diablo's thrill will last longer, so don't go saying 'clickfest' ruined the game.
There is one town with all the essentials: Weapons, magic, Sean Connery, a one-legged bastard and a drunkard; and one 15-level dungeon. The levels of the dungeon get progressivley harder, and I mean much harder. You will want to clean out every level, squeezing every last drop of experience before moving on. Mind you, this methodical character building will pay off, by the time you hit the last level you'll be able to outwit Diablo X-Men style.
The inventory system is ok, considering you drop whatever you want in the town and it stays there indeffinitley. This takes the challenge out of equipment managing.
There isn't much sense of roleplaying, because all three of the classes can reach the same state by the end of the game. You can choose a fighter and pump you first levels into fighting and your last levels into magic, the same for mages and rogues. You can become a demigod. For this reason the only thing class determines is the pace. The fighter can race through the levels of the dungeon and beat this game in the matter of hours. The rogue can do the same, with more careful attention to level and equipment. The sorcerer will be a slow crawl through the dungeon, clearing out every monster to get maximum levelage.
The dungeon levels are randomly generated, and though there are only 15 or so miniquests, the game randomly decides which quests you will get, giving Diablo psuedo-infinite replayability.

Sound

Sound can really creep you out sometimes. Catacombs are dark, and dark minions can jump out anytime. Diablo can be a real spooky, with painful moaning from undead spirits. For some reason, the Goat Men really spooked me out. If you believe in a Hell and Heaven, this game can be scary.

Gameplay

Diablo is just mostly clicking, but it's not pointless clicking. The left mouse button is attack and move. The right is spells. There's tons of weapons, like swords, bows, staffs, and spells. There are 3 DIFFERENT classes, the Warrior, the Rogue, and Sorceror. Warriors are mostly in hand-to-hand fighting, Rogue into archery, and Sorcerors into magic and spells. I prefer the Rogue, because she has range, and the bows can become really powerful. The Warrior is the easiest for beginners, but can get tough in the long run. Sorcerors are the hardest, because they stink in close quarters battle, but once fully developed, they can become nearly invincible.
