Summary

I have to bring up this game's average, since it is by far the best game I own, and I played this for months after I got it! Beautiful graphics, but of course what really makes it is extremely user-friendly gameplay. If you don't like cheaters in multi-player, for God's sake join a guild and play in private games with the hundreds of members of a legit clan! I love having a game that I could both play right away (no need for lengthy manuals) yet find required some strategy and subtlety, especially on BattleNet (totally free!) when I have to coordinate my efforts with other players.Diablo certainly had minor limitations; a village of eight people whose "gossip" was uninformative, useless memory-wasting bored me, and apparently Blizzard also heeded (in Hellfire) the complaints that it took forever to walk from WIrt to the Witch. However, I could never get enough of this game, and forced myself to stop before I flunked all my classes.

Summary

Blizzard has really outdone themselves with Diablo, by creating a sophisticated game (despite the massive killing sprees) that is intriguing, redemptive, and with unprecedented replayability. I've been a Diablo addict for close to a year now and I still find myself playing (Pretty remarkable, considering my short attention span.). People who post and say the game gets easier obviously have n't spent much time in the multiplayer mode which allows you to pick differing difficulty levels. I have an advanced level 43 character and I still find tough situations that could kill my character. The gameplay is fairly smooth, although multiplayer connections on Battle.net and via modem game sometimes have poor latency resulting in bad lag, which can be disastrous in a "live action combat situation." The graphics of Diablo are stunning and the sound is also well done. Diablo was a great idea (albeit an addictive one) and I look forward to the future of Blizzard and maybe a newer, even more absorbing Diablo....

Summary

I haven't heard of anyone who hasn't heard of Diablo. This game is simply a classic. It has a mix of role playing, adventure, and action, from a top-down third person view. One of the best things that make Diablo stand out from other RPGs-at least for me-is its real-time combat. There are many RPGs out there which are very good, and also pretty famous among the gaming community. But I find their turn-based combat really boring and clumsy. It gets me impatient very fast and makes me feel restricted. But in Diablo, you get to defend attacks with your shield (automatically if u're not attacking) then follow it with a heavy blow of your sword immediately. You can press the mouse button and see the result happening simultaneously, and also feel the angry reaction of the enemy at the same time. In one word, real-time combat is what made Diablo stand out in the RPG world with a touch of cool action. Also the 3 characters: fighter, rogue (archer), and sorcerer (magician) give Diablo a very appreciated value of re-playability. Because each character applies different strategies accomplishing certain goals and eliminating the different enemies. Yes, there will come games in the future that will impress us more than Diablo did. But the credit of innovation will always be Blizzard's, with this masterpiece they leaded the way with: Diablo. It's exactly like in first person shooters, there are better games than Quake II today, but if you ever wanted to talk about 3D FPSs using a brand name, you will only see that Quake is the brand name that fits. And Command & Conquer is the brand name of strategy. So naturally, Diablo will always be the brand name of action RPGs.

Sound

Sound in Diablo? It's a manual to be followed! Almost perfect. The acting of the voices is really great. The ambient sound effects are very dreary and they put you in the mood, pretty weird and spooky stuff. And the music is just really really really genuine. I specially like the music that plays in the village.

Gameplay

Gameplay is more than easy. There's nothing complicated at all about playing Diablo. You use the mouse exclusively for all gameplay, except for the Shift button that is very advisable to use with the Rogue and sometimes with the Warrior and Sorcerer when they want to receive enemies spilling out from doorways with consecutive blows on the spot without moving. One mouse button is used. You almost don't need to read the manual for controls, but it should be helpful to read it for understanding the numbers under the items.

Sound

Sound effects are unobtrusive and realistic. The original score takes some chances and really adds to the atmosphere. The voices are professional and easy to understand, with just the right amount of medieval hokum.

Gameplay

Utterly absorbing, Diablo sucks you right in and doesn't let go. Your hero's interaction with the levels is fluid and intuitive compared to some games like Rage of Mages.

Gameplay starts out easy enough, but the learning curve is beautifully tuned to keep the excitement and challenge going for hundreds of hours of play. The three character classes are all great fun and very different. You must play them all through several games to really get all the juice out of this one. When you have a handle on the single player game, multiplayer adds a whole new layer of tension, difficulty, and interaction with other players. And just when you think you've gotten pretty good, you can try ironman, and realize there are vast areas of high-level strategy and tactics you've barely scratched.

The problem-solving aspect of Diablo is a special favorite of mine. There is plenty of room for creativity, and finding new ways to put the most fiendish monsters on ice is quite a pleasure. It's not just a puzzle, where you try to follow the game designer's thinking.

While there is lots to think about, you don't get bogged down in an excess of detail as happens so quickly in bloated games like Baldur's Gate. Diablo gameplay is so much better than competing games, there should be a rating higher than 5, just for this one game. The only weak spot in the gameplay is the cheating that goes on in multiplayer games on Battle.net. They say this will be fixed in Diablo II.

Sound

Flawless. Voice acting is the best I've ever heard. Although the NPC's in town have voice acting to all their dialog, they never grow tiring or become annoying. Great use of cultural accents in speaking the English language for the voice acting.

Sounds are fantastic - no noise or distortion at all. I love the sound effects for the magic Fireball.

**** Diablo is a game no computer owner should be without. ****

Gameplay

Fun and Addicting! Random generated levels, quick response point and click, random creation of weapons and armor with random attributes, smooth game play (no jerkiness), character stats are abundant, and battling requires much strategy and thought.

Battle.net = A haven for all Gamers. The best thing is it's FREE! Unlike most companies (OSI) where they charge you $10/month for playing their games which you purchased to own already.
