Summary

Ok. This game was great. it was the single reason why i have no life right now. I spent day and night trying to be the best at Battlefield and darn near did it when i entered a dogfighting championship. Battlefield 1942 combines creative maps, a good choice of sveral unique unit types, and the almost unique ability to use any vehicle, plane or boat to attack the enemy position.

Sound

The sound on this game is excellent, you can distinguish between the several different kinds of weaponry just by the sound they make. Also, the plane and tank engines are so realisticly loud that you can just hear your radio, enemy planes, and bullets either flyign by or hitting you.

Gameplay

The gameplay in BF1942 is what makes it what it is. It is so in depth that there are several different ways in which you can do anything. For instance, you can use a plane to shoot down enemy bombers or do strafing runs against infantry, or you can use it to bomb enemy forces to smithereens. Also, the mulitplayer online makes sure that the game is a skill battle more than a match between who can shoot more bullets first. The mod support also gives you more of a gameplay option (i highly reccomend downloading the Desert Combat mod). Also, the campaign mode allows the player to go through a series of battles set and try to come through at the end with an untouched battle record. There is also an immense amount of control enabled for the skill of the AI and the overall way the game is played.

This game is simply the most fun i've had playing an FPS. I've spent so much time playing this game because it's just that good. The mod suppot is incredably which provides endless gameplay.

Sound

The sound is overall pretty good. There are some sounds that could have been done better but they are pretty good.

Gameplay

Very very good gameplay and through mod support it keeps going and getting better.

Summary

Realistic WW2 Simulation allowing you to choose many differant weapons or vehicles to complete your mission. I find this game boring because I keep getting killed after only 30-60 seconds of play (I'm agressive), and the missions are short-way too short. I spend more time restarting the missions than I do playing them.

Sound

OK, but I reduced my sound quality to get smoother movement in the graphics.

Gameplay

Requires a powerful CPU/Video combination. Gameplay is excellent but you'll need a sreious computer. Workes poorly on my 1.2Ghz-(4XAGP)machine and works OK on my 1.8Ghz-(8XAGP) with medium graphics amd sound settings.

Summary

Battlefield 1942 is a multiplayer game. The Single player option is an afterthought, but you can use it as a means to practice flying or learn some tricks. The heart of the gameplay contains a living, breathing battlefield that allows for endless options in an immersive World War II environment. Battlefield 1942 should appeal to history buffs, First Person Shooter fans, online gamers, and strategists. In other words, most gamers will find this to be one of the best online games ever made and possibly the best game ever made. It is that good, that immersive, that entertaining, that exciting, and a work of art. There is really no reason to pass up this title. The sheer size of the game can be overwhelming at first with different unit classes and many vehicles on land, sea, and air. That's right, you can control planes, tanks, jeeps, boats, battleships, aircraft carriers, submarines, and other vehicles. This adds many options for you to participate in the success for your team. Identifying a need and accepting that role is at the heart of Battlefield 1942, and at the core of war.

Sound

Bullets whiz by as you traverse hostile terrain trying to gain position on the map. Planes sound closer as their propeller nears and the strafing begins...you can kiss yourself goodbye. Bombers bombing, warships blasting hillsides, machine guns firing, and tanks battling are some of the sounds that you will hear. There is a warlike realism that provides an encompassing experience. The explosions are huge, and all the little details make this game feel great. All the sounds heighten the gameplay and make you come back for more. Also, the music is a simple but fun song that creates a mood for the game.

Gameplay

The main online game is called conquest. There are other game options like capture the flag, but conquest is where this game really shines. The object of conquest is to capture spawn points on the map highlighted by a team flag. Each team has a home base spawn point, but there are advantages for having more. For example, when a team controls over 50% of the spawn points, it will remove tickets at a faster rate from the enemy. Tickets are points that countdown to zero in order to end the game. Each team starts with a certain number of tickets dictated by the server, and 300 is very common. This system encourages players to stay alive, because the team loses tickets for each death. This gameplay element adds a unique balance between killing and dying that makes the game interesting and challenging. The best way to stay alive is with stealth-like movement avoiding main paths. Also, finding health lockers and ammo bins are important for replenishing your health and ammo. Another need for capturing spawn points is to gain access to the resources there like vehicles, planes, guns, ammo bins, and health lockers. Furthermore, your team will have the ability to spawn at the new spawn points...hence the name. Like most strategy games, map control is important. There are 5 classes to choose from. Infantry, scout (sniper), medic, engineer, and anti-tank. They all have a need and play a role in a rock-paper-scissors gameplay element similar to what you find in a real-time strategy game. Furthermore, each class has a variety of weapons that add another layer of rock-paper-scissors gameplay for various situations. For example, the anti-tank class has a bazooka for shooting tanks, but may need to switch to a handgun for close combat. Also, an engineer could fix things, but may have to switch to a rifle for close combat or lay mines on bridges to stop tank advances. Many of these counters are discovered as you play the game, and keep you thinking about how to tackle different situations. When you die, you have the option of spawning as any class in an immediate need. It is easy to change classes by swapping packs with one laying on the ground.

Sound

The sounds in this game are quite incredible. With the aide of a decent sound solution and speaker setup, you are going to be impressed with just how real this games sounds. The sound of an artillery barrage in the distance is done so well that I was mesmerised by the realism of it. The sound adds to the mood and feel of the game to an amazing degree. All the vehicles sound grunty, with the gunfire and richochets making me physically duck at times.
If you possess a sub-woofer system them you are in for a treat.

Gameplay

Battlefield 1942 is a different sort of shooter in that it doesn't really focus on reflex, trigger happy gun play. Don't get me wrong, there are bullets flying around in abundance in this game. It just doesn't approach the battling like most others. The thing that impressed me most was the ability to get into any vehicle, including aircraft, and take to your enemies with fervour. The graphics engine is well implemented and the transition from foot to vehicle is seamless. The controls for each form of transport are separately configurable which is a great option. Each mode of transport (destructive) has a different feel but don't take long to become accustomed to. Flying the planes takes a bit of practise, but with the controls set to suit your style, it shouldn't take long before you are barnstoming around the battlefield.
I have played this game in the single player mode as well as LAN and on the internet. Let me say that the single player section is really only a practice ground for you to hone your skills for online play. It is entertaining for a fair while but the BOTS repetitive stupidity gets a bit irritating before to long. Playing this game online is where it is at! You will need a broadband connection to enjoy it properly. I can attest to this as I have tried it on dialup as well as cable. Bottom line; Cable "GOOD", Dialup "BAD". The amount of exhilerating fun I have had with this game is incredible. There are so many different experiences that it would be impossible to relate them all here. From single handedly holding a checkpoint to laying waste to the enemy base with their own tank. This brings me to the games structure. It is a kind of "class based" team game where the main aim is to hold down strategic points on the map to give you the advantage of being able to spawn there and keep the pressure on the enemy. This gives the game a slightly more realistic feel than any other. Most maps are loosely based on real world battles which also adds to the realism.
Another thing that gives it its realism is the explosion effects. You have to experience being caught in a tank battle crossfire to truly appreciate the gutteral anxiety of the situation.
There is vast amounts of potential for team work but, unfortunately, it seldoms happens on line. Most battles degenerate into a free for all which is still loads of fun. I have often yearned to co-ordinate a concerted team attack but most servers are populated by little kiddies that prefer to play "silly buggers" (colloquial Aussie saying for being idiots). One such mental giant was hopping up and down beside an ammo crate on the Berlin map while constantly throwing grenades down the street. now this is well and good, but he was throwing them amongst his own teammates. It looked amusing but was also annoying. It is still an intensly enjoyable game online (broadband) and I have had many, many enjoyable times playing it. Nothing beats jumping into a tank or plane and tearing off to do some damage.
There are also ships in this game. When I first saw them I was dumbfounded. The Aircraft carriers are bigger than most other FPS maps. You can even control these behemoths. There is so much to do and so much going on that it is hard to be bored with this game. All gun emplacements (including very cool anti-aircraft ones) can be manned and are limited by an over exhuberant overheating effect.
Everything is well impemented with the sad exception of the AI. To say that the BOTS are soomewhat stupid is an understatement. Some times they will snipe you from across the other side of the map and other times you will see them playing musical tanks, hopping in and out of it like Keystone Cops. This doesn't spoil the game game, just makes it annoying at times.

Sound

Well, let's say, those people out there, owning EAX and Dolby support should be in for a treat. Rockets flying over, bullets whizzing through the air, ... it all sounds spectacular. But I'm sorry to say: Medal of Honor still has a better sound.

Gameplay

Singleplayer mode hasn't so much to offer. Sure, there are fifteen gigantic maps, but there is no logical story woven between them. Your goal is to complete them without losing too much of your allies. You can play as a soldier, or a medic, or an engineer,..., each option has its advantages and its disadvantages. It's your choice. Tanks, airplanes, and boats are also at your disposal, fully armed and deadly. All these options and gamemodes offer lots of fun, I can tell you that, but furthermore singleplayer fails. It could have been a REAL experience if there was a REAL story involved.
Multiplayer mode, on the other hand, won't disappoint you since there is no need for a good story. But the action and the fun remain the same.

Summary

When I first looked at the game I was in EB looking for a new game to buy and I came across BF 1942. I did like WWII games but I had only found 1 that a really liked and that was MOHAA. So I looked into it and I decided that I would pick it up and see how it was. This was one of the best decisions in my gamming experiences. I started it up and went online and I loved it from the start. I was hooked from the first time I spawned into the first battle I ever did at Iwo-Jima. I couldn't seem to pull myself away from the game. The wonderful graphics and sound, and the way that it played were better than I'd seen in a long time. Its one of those games that hooks you and then reels ya in so that you'll never be able to wriggle free. It is a game that I think everybody should check out for themselves. Its a game that any computer gamer should have. Even if you aren't big into computer games you should still pick up a copy of this so that you can experience this for yourself.

Sound

This is probably the area of the game where I've seen the most conflict. I've also not seen really any in the middle point for this aspect of the game. People either say that the sound is horrible or they say the sound is great. For me I thought the sound was great. When you hear a tank fire off a round and see it explode in the middle of a group of men and see them fly every which way. Or a plane dropping its bombs on enemy armor and hear the bombs hitting the ground and exploding in a pillar of flames and smoke. The sound makes up a major part of getting the real feel of a WWII battle ground. I don't think it gets any better when your crawling on your stomach, trying to avoid the explosions from the enemy armor while you work your way to the enemy position. You get that feeling when the hair begins to stand on end and you feel as if you are really in a battle in WWII. The sound on this game is really good, I'm not saying its THE best but it is really up there with the top games.

Gameplay

The gameplay for this game, in my opinion is really awsome. If you liked the gameplay for MOHAA you'll really like the gameplay for this one. It is basically the same except for some of the weapons. As for vehicles it tops anything that ive seen yet. You can jump in the pilot seat of a plane, or drive anything from a tank to a jeep. Or just take on the enemy on foot as a sniper (my fav), engineer, medic, assault, or anti tank. I will say that being a sniper you will run into the problem of a glitch were a perfect head shot will not kill the person. But, I spend most of my time as a sniper and don't run into this problem that much. Basically this is a game were about any weapon or vehicle you see is usable. All in all I think the gameplay for this game is really good.

Sound

It is great. The music is epic and every sound is as it should be. It is very convincing. I love the sound of incoming bombs and shells (unless I too close).

Gameplay

Take your pick, if you like flight sims, FPS games, Tank/Mech sims, naval sims, ATV off-roading sims this game has something for you! It also has elements I've never seen before like parachuting into battle. The best part is that it is a complete battlefield simulation with all of the cool weapons you played army with as a kid. Imagine launching from the deck of a carrier, flying over water then land to drop bombs on an enemy base with guys on the ground shooting flak cannons at you. You drop your bombs and your plane gets hit so you parachute down to the battlefield where you duel it out until a tank gets a bead on your location and blows you to kingdom come. You're dead but you pick where you'd like to re-enter the battle (anywhere your team has control) and this time you decide to start on a battleship, first you man the big guns and blow some chunks out of an enemy air base on an island a few hundred yards from the shore, they start launching bomber sortes against your ship so you and a few other guys hop into a troop transport and ride it to shore where you storm the base and dynamite their bombers and planes before they can take off. Your team takes control of the base and you hop into a jeep, ride to the nearest tank base and hop into a tank to attack the next closest enemy base. I hope this paints a picture of how this game plays. It has everything! The nice thing is that everything is easy to use and understand (arcade like). This game is designed to be fun above all else.

Sound

Sound is cool. Nice explosion sound effects and bullet ricochets. Not much music excecpt on the loading screen. You can also issue voicec commands and they even even speak in native languages i.e Russians speak in Russian, Japs speak in Japanese etc.

Gameplay

Well this game is full of 'wow' moments' like the first time you see a bomber roar overhead and ditch its payload on allied tank. In reality the planes are more of a novelty (even if their fun) because its the ground combat that wins the day. It's basically about capturing outposts and then being ab;e to spawn from them. Tanks are very cumbersome but deadly when in a godd aiming position.

Jeeps are really fast and can seat two people. These are good for getting you to a point on the map quickly. Of course you can always take a plane and then parachute into the it but this can make you vulnerable while your in the air.

no one should miss this game. Even its not quite realistic I think it really nails the WW2 concept nicely.

Sound

The sounds match the awesome gameplay as do the graphics. I have nothing against the sound. When bombs drop you hear their last decent before you and your buddies are toast. Diving planes scream just before kamikaziing into a battleship.

Gameplay

The gameplay is quite frankly very good. While everything isn't the most realistic, it is good enough. While inside planes, turrets and tanks the controls are arcade like. Despensing of the tedious settings and manuevering of otherwise complex equipment. Seperating it from other online games, the power and strength of an individual ingame relies solely on the players skill and experience playing.
The weapons are all rounded out making them all useful in there own situation, even the handgun! Most specifically what I like most about this game is that you can run and when incoming fire darts at you, hit the dirt hard and recouperate.
