Sound

This is also outstanding, with 64 players playing at one time it actually sounds like war. Bombs blasting, machine guns blazing, it doesn't get any better.

Gameplay

I haven't bothered playing this game in single player mode, so I don't know how the AI is. Multiplayer mode is incredible with team battles raging with up to 64 players playing simultaneously. The only thing that annoys me is the (kids) just running for the airplanes constantly and flying around not knowing what their doing. So I just avoid alot of maps with airplanes. The only change I would make to avoid this a bit would make the respawn time for vehicles (ie. planes, boats, tanks) much longer, like 10-15 minutes. This would also be a good addition, so if you can sink a teams carrier they will be without their vessel for awhile, not just a minute or so. My favorite map happens to be Omaha Beach, I like being a Nazi defending against the attacking Americans.

Sound

Some glitches with SB sound cards mean that for some of us cant use H/W accelerated sound, other than that bullet zipping bomb whistles are spot on. Theres no "fake" Background noise as with DoD as the ammount of players on a multiplayer server(upto 64) means that theres always action going on.

Gameplay

This is realy a multiplayer game and leans towards arcade style of play.
With the release of the 1.2 patch this game has got even better. For instance you can fly the B-17 with 2 of ya mates in the gun turrets (requires team play) and carpet bomb an area, you can fly a p-51 or spitty, or the me109 and zeros, SBD bombers or the A62 bombers from tiger tanks to panzers to t-34/75's and so on even the jeeps are a riot to drive.....and the physics of these vehicles are good...very good its a sim/fps. Conquest maps are a must where the object is to capture and hold flags not just kill. Overall the gamplay is never ending

Sound

The sounds are very well done, and add a great deal to the atmosphere of the game. It's as though the sounds were digitized for the game. Also, Axis troops speak in their native tongue(s), which was an unexpected (and nice) touch.

Gameplay

If you're thinking of multiplayer online, I suggest broadband internet access. If you live in an area where 56K dial-up is the only choice, you'll be at something of a disadvantage. Still, you can snipe, play as a medic healing team mates, or as an engineer repairing vehicles while also laying mines & demolition charges.

There are some problems, primarily with the tanks, which I hope will be addressed in the next patch:

The Sherman's 75L38 main gun could NOT penetrate the frontal armor of the German MkVI Tiger. The shells would simply bounce off, doing no damage.

Likewise, the 76L54 main gun of the M10 Wolverine (Tank Destroyer) could destroy a Tiger, IF they hit the Tiger in the side, rear or top or bottom. (Note: The M10 was open-topped, which meant a single grenade could kill the entire crew. This fact has been ignored in the game.)

Oh, and shooting at a Tiger with a bazooka would only make them mad.

The boldly sloping armor of the Soviet T34 seems to be ignored in this game. I have seen interviews (on the History Channel) with German tank commanders, who fought at the battle of Kursk. More often then not, a shot fired at the front of a T34 would simply glance off the sloping armor, doing no damage.

The short-barreled MkIV Panzer in the game was an infantry support tank armed with a 75L24 main gun. This was a low-velocity field gun, firing a high-explosive round. The 75L24 was useful only against soft targets (such as infantry,) and lacked the accuracy and penetration to be of any use against hard targets, such as tanks.

The Japanese tanks are over-rated in this game, to say the least. Because the Japanese army fought primarily in the Jungle (China, etc.,) they largely ignored the development of armor. The result of this is that the tanks the Japanese DID have were under-gunned and under-armored. A single hit from a Sherman could, and would, destroy a Japanese tank.

Sound

Fair. very very annoying soundtrack on options screen that will drive you nuts if you dont switch it off.
Battlefield sounds are ok, but i still think they could have been better and more atmospheric to make the battlefield all that more realistic.

Gameplay

Ok, so i got my first gripe out of the way, now down to the nitty gritty:
Dont expect any cutscenes or animated introductions to your missions, before each mission and after, you are given textual scenarios and conclusions. ("boring, i know")
Once youve read the battle situation and you know whats expected of you, You can choose to be 1 of about five different soldiers (assualt, sniper, engineer, heavy weapons, medic) (depending on which one you choose, it will dictate the nature of the weapons and items that you carry onto the battlefield). You then pick a spawn point on the map (one of your marked out bases that you have to protect), and then you wait for about 5 minutes ("no joke. Go make a cuppa while ya wait") for the map to load.
This game is essentially CTF (capture the flag), where the common scenario involves either you defending checkpoints on the battlefield, or advancing towards claiming them. If you die during your campaign, you simply pick a new soldier-type, a new spawn-point, and then wait for up to 20 seconds (arrrgh, this i hate) for you to be loaded back into the battle.
Usually the winning side in each battle, is simply the side that kills all of the other sides soldiers first (there is an on-screen counter for this), which can get very boring after many rounds in single player.
The enemy soldiers AI sucks, and most often you wont need stealth. You find yourself running right up to the side of a soldier who is advancing, and killing him while he simply doesnt even acknowledge your obvious presence.
The overiding sense that i felt when playing this game was that, i didnt feel like i personally, as the gamer, wasnt accomplishing anything, apart from seeing my kill-count at the end of each round. By this i mean, that you are never singled out as a hero at any time, and so rather than feeling like you are playing the game, the game is actually just playing out itself, and you contribute a minor part in the outcome. I have even died and left the game on the spawn screen while the battle continued, and my team have still won!.
The only way i felt this game would succeed and give a sense of any accomplishment, would be to play it online. I can see it's potential in that sense as a fun game, but as a single player, this game stinks and is ungratifying (no sense of reward).
If you have ADSL and love on-line multiplaying games, i would say that you would probably enjoy giving this a whirl, but if your like me on a 56k modem with no option but to play single player, then leave this game well alone. In my opinion, it was built for multiplay!

Sound

The sound in Battlefield 1942 is amazing, and is actually an important part of gameplay. You will find yourself laying in hiding in the rubble of a ruined house, listening to a tank's treads creak and it's turret turn around looking for you. You will be hiding in the top floor of a building behind enemy lines and feel fear when you hear a vehicle pull up, kill it's engine, and hear footsteps coming up the stairs. You will learn to hear enemy planes coming long before you can see them and be waiting for them with an anti-aircraft gun.

Not only is there a unique sound for almost every interactive object in the game, there are sound effects that are used subtly for ambience that you often don't notice until you remember you are playing a game - you can hear the surf when on the beach at Omaha, and hear the river rolling past when fighting at Market Garden. When you climb up in a tower or stand at the edge of a cliff you can hear the wind blowing past. You can even hear flags flapping in the wind when you stand near.

There is no music in-game, although the music during the menu screens is very good - most of it has a dramatic orchestral action-move soundtrack sound, with some elements of Jazz - it is completely appropriate to the game and I actually wouldn't mind being able to listen to it while I played, though I would probably turn it off soon so I could better hear the enemy.

The voice acting in the game is good, nothing particularly exceptional but nothing wrong with it. There are dozens of voice commands you can give by tapping sequences of the function keys, from calling for reinforcements to asking people to get in your vehicle, and they are different for every nationality - there are Russian, German, and Japanese voices, as well as English with both an American and English accent. Now, if you don't want to learn a foreign language and don't want to be able to read the text version of the message you just heard in the upper left corner, you can set it so all the voices are in American English. I do this so I can better keep track of what my team is doing, but I feel somewhat guilty for missing out on the more authentic foreign voices.

Gameplay

If you have ever played a first-person shooter, you will be familiar with the basics of the controls and how to play, but there are numerous other factors that will come into play, and the game has a somewhat longer learning curve than most games like it, especially if you intend to make full use of every kind of vehicle and class in the game.

The player joins the team of one side in a two sided conflict, Axis or Allies. The nationality of the player depends on the map - if you play Axis in the Pacific theater you are going to wear a Japanese uniform and mostly use Japanese equipment. Allies can be British (in the North African maps), American (Pacific Theater and Western Europe, or Russian (Western Front). Your character can be one of five classes - you can be an assault soldier, who is armed with an automatic rifle, a pistol, and grenades. They are very effective in combat and simple to play. You can also be a scout, who has a scoped sniper rifle instead of an assault rifle and the ability to radio in artillery strikes. This may sound similar to the ability Lieutenants had in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but it works quite differently. When a scout uses their binoculars on a target any player on his team who is using artillery can get a view of that target from the perspective of where the scout was for about two minutes, or until the scout dies (the scout can move on after calling in the strike, though). This allows skilled players to hit targets outside of their line of sight, which can be very important on certain maps. There is also the anti-tank soldier, who has a bazooka instead of a rifle. The bazooka is powerful against vehicles but can be tricky to aim, and is not very good against infantry (if you hit one you kill him, but the rockets are relatively easy to dodge). There is also the medic, who has a sub-machine gun instead of a rifle, and the ability to heal injured players (including himself). Then there is my personal favorite, the engineer. He comes with a powerful rifle like the scout, but he has no scope. He can lay powerful remote controlled detonation chareges or mines that can take out any vehicle, and can repair any damaged vehicle or gun emplacement. There is plenty of variety in the gameplay before you even get to the vehicles (which I will get to later).

In most games the goal is to cause a certain number of casualties to the opposing side before suffering a certain number yourself. This is done with the 'ticket system'. Each side is assigned a certain number of tickets depending on server settings, map, and the number of players. Your team loses a ticket whenever someone on your side dies, and you will lose tickets steadily if you lose control of a certain number of flags which are scattered about the map, usually near villages or bases. When you die you can reenter the game at any flag your team controls after a short time (usually 20 seconds or less). To capture the flags you have to be near it for a short period of time with nobody from the other side nearby - this leads to interesting scenarios when one player is hiding near a flag and preventing the other side from taking it over until they find and kill him. A game can turn around very quickly - you can have a large advantage but still lose if the other side can keep control of the flags for long enough. As you can see, there are a number of ways to be useful to the team, and it's possible for one skilled and lucky player to turn the tide of the battle by a few strategic flag captures.

There is another fun game mode, Capture the Flag, where there are no tickets and you score points by entering the enemy base, touching their flagpole, then touching your own flagpole in your home base (hmm, sounds dirty). This is just as much fun as the normal conquest mode and invites the use of different tactics, like quick and stealthy lightning raids on the enemy base. Oh yeah, there is also a team death match mode where the only way your side loses tickets is if someone is killed, and a cooperative mode where you and other human players can play against a team of computer controlled players.

The greatest part of the game is the addition of vehicles. There are dozens of them, authentic tanks, APCs, jeeps, ships, boats, fighters, bombers, etc. All of them have a useful role in the game, some of them can be crewed by more than one person, and any of them can be used by anybody at any time. The control scheme is similar on most of them (though the planes of course require somewhat more complicated controls) so you can jump in anything you find and make use of it. Need to get somewhere in a hurry? Hop in a jeep and you can outrun everything except the planes. Need some heavy firepower? Get a tank, or maybe a mobile artillery piece if you prefer to hang back a little. When vehicles are destroyed they return to the game at their starting point after a period of time, so you can usually find something you can use (although if there are a lot of players you may have to go with your second choice if a teammate beats you to that Zero fighter or Tiger tank you had your eye on).

The addition of vehicles makes the combat much more dynamic and interesting, and allows you to choose what style of play you like. Some people seem to specialize on using one particular vehicle (especially pilots), while others seem to be competent with anything. I personally enjoy all of them, and use what's needed in the situation. For instance, I was playing a game of capture the flag and an enemy grabbed our flag and headed away from our base in a tank. Nobody nearby was in something fast enough to catch him, so I got in a jeep and chased him down, jumped out of the jeep as it zoomed past him, and laid mines in front of him and behind him while the tank driver was probably wondering where the hell I came from. After I blew him up and recovered the flag I felt like I had just lived a scene in an action movie.

Sound

What is a canadian speed car? a convertable manual transmission..........snowplow? i find it amazing that people can boast about a state of the art police force that sits on horses, that doesnt eat doughnuts, and cant even catch a kid that just knocked off seven eleven? but they wouldnt have seven eleven up there because there os no use for slushies or milkshakes. What about racial profiling there? do the walruses discriminate against the seals or what? if you find this speach racist then u are stupid and unpatriotic. or u are just canadian. if i make u think good. If u are dont like my intolerance then u are intolerant as well so just stfu.

Gameplay

How do canadians play games? doesnt it snow to deep for them to game from their igloos? when i began thinking about an ideal canadian strategy game with another person in canada u would have to send each move via moose postal service

Sound

Well if there's an achilles heal in this game this is it - in two ways. (1) The sounds are quite unrealistic to say the least (this said after playing Medal of Honor). Although I'm really impressed with the multi-language feature of the game the actual action sounds seem a year or two in the past. (2) This game is REALLY picky about the soundcard used for gameplay. The "Hardware Acceleration" feature seems to resolve some problems but not all. Many gameplay (lag) issues are directly attributed to the soundcard. Visit some of the game forums for ways to resolve these issues.

Gameplay

Although SP (Single Player) mode allows you to play agains the game's AI players it's still not the same as duking it out on the battlefield with real people in MultiPlayer (MP). If you're planning to join up on the Internet be advised that a cable/DSL connection is more favourable for gameplay than slower modem connections. Lag quickly becomes an issue. When playing in MP mode it would be nice to see some reprogrammable macro functions for online commands/discussion instead of having to type your intentions to your teammates.

Summary

BattleField 1942
Let’s see, what do I think of Battlefield 1942. Well, I must say that my girlfriend would tell you that I like this better than her. I play it every day after work (except for the times when I feel it would be in my best interest health wise to NOT play it).

I hear that the game has its glitches. Myself I have only experienced one. In multiplayer, I get disconnected a lot. That can be very frustrating, but EA is working on a new patch that I am hoping will cure this. Other than that, I have no qualms with this game.

Ok, so that's everything. Now to close this incessive babbling. Myself I LOVE the multiplayer. It is FREE, and it offers the most exciting gameplay. Singleplayer is good too, but you really can't work together with AI troops. They are not DUMB however, but you can't get AI troops to target artillery for instance. Or fire on it if you have it targeted for that matter. Enemy AI is uncanny in its ability to find you and hunt you down. If you fire at an AI opponent, it will find you and come after you. Example. One time (at band camp...sorry) I was hiding behind a building and fired at a tank that was facing the opposite direction. The tank spun around and put the bead on me. I ran to the other corner and fired from there..., again, he found me. Incredibly smart AI.

To me EA has something here. I was amazed by Medal of Honor Allied Assault, and while this game does not quite have the graphics down like MOHAA, they are great. The sounds are not as perfect as MOHAA, but they are great. One thing this game HAS over MOHAA is the major amounts of stuff you can do. And the fact that MOHAA is a great singleplayer game, but lacks in multiplayer, Battlefield 1942 is just the opposite. If you like MOHAA, buy this game. You won't be disappointed. If I had to choose a number between 1-10 (10 being the best), I would give this game an

8.5

Plusses:
Graphics
Sound
Learning curve
Outstanding number of things you can do

Minuses:
Lack of cooperation among other players in multiplayer (Not EAs fault, just a hint to other players)
Disconnection problems
Some weird weapon faults (i.e. Bazooka vs. Grenade against tanks)

Sound

The sound is wonderful..., I like the fact that you can actually "feel" like you're at war 'cause the sounds are so good. Being able to tell where the enemy is while crouched in a hiding place waiting to pounce, knowing exactly where and when he/she is in the prime position to take the shot is fabulous!! Bullets wizzing overhead...., bouncing here and there as it's path is altered by obstructions.

Gameplay

Gameplay is wonderful. You can operate a number of different items which is what I think sets this game apart from the others. Here is a list of what you can use: Tanks
Jeeps
APC (Armored Personal Carriers)
Battleships
Destroyers
Aircraft Carriers
Submarines
Fighter Planes
Bombers
AA (Anti-Aircraft) Guns
Machine Guns

There may be more, but with so much to choose from, it's easy to forget some. Now, how do I feel about each one? Ok, I'll tell ya.

Tanks:
The tanks are awesome. Each Army has a different one. Some have two. Each one has different attributes. Such as the German Panzer (best of them all, even in real life) is faster and packs a more powerful punch than the American Sherman. The tanks are a little tricky to learn at first, but the learning cure is short. At speed, they can be a handful on sharp turns. It's easy to turn too long trying to get the tank to react to your inputs and then all of the sudden you find yourself over-steering.
All tanks are equipped with machine guns also so you can knock out troops with that and vehicles with main turret. Nevertheless, be careful, the machine gun will overheat if you use it too long at once leaving you vulnerable while waiting for it to cool. Most tanks are also equipped with a secondary machine gun, which can be operated by another player. This is great for added help, but I've found it difficult to actually target anything when the driver is moving quickly and turning the turret.

Jeeps:
JEEPS ARE FAST! If you want to get from point "A" to point "B" in a hurry, grab a Jeep. They have NO defenses other than their speed. And, likewise, no offensive powers either unless you use it to literally run over your opponent. They can be used as "guided missiles" too, but you had better be sure to jump before you hit, or you'll join your target.

APC:
APCs in my mind are worthless. They are good for transporting up to eight men, but after that, they are worthless. Slow, cumbersome......, they feel to me as though they are an easy target and a good way to get a lot of troops killed at once.

Battleships:
The power of the Navy...., but hard to target. Maybe I'm wrong, but I THINK you can't use a scout to target these things. If I am right, I can't figure out why anyone would wanna use this thing. It has mondo firepower, but a close range weapon it is not. Most of the time you're firing into that fog that I mentioned earlier and have no clue where you’re hitting. Just firing this massive beast can give ya a sense of power though, but that wanes fast as you wonder if you're helping or doing any good. It is equipped with AA guns, but it is very vulnerable to submarines because it lacks depth charges.

Destroyers:
Ahhh, now this is an all around good ship. It is smaller, faster and more maneuverable than the Battleship. It is a shorter-range vessel, but it can be targeted onto a target by a scout (see "BF Artillery Tutorial" to the left). Other plusses, it has depth charges to tame unruly submarines and RADAR to help you find the pesky enemy. Downside, is vulnerable to airplanes.

Aircraft Carriers:
Park this thing where it's hard to find and leave it there. It does have AA guns, but that's it. Oh yeah..., and airplanes.

Submarines:
These things are cool. My favorite weapon in the Navy. Only equipped with torpedoes, but oh so much fun. Sneaking up on your enemy and blowin' 'em outta the water rocks. The only downside I find about these is that once you submerge, it's impossible to find a target. You have a SONAR ping, but it doesn’t help. In most cases this doesn't hinder your objective, unless you're chasing or trying to get away from another sub.

Fighter/Bomber Planes:
I haven't had much experience with these. Why, 'cause it's practically impossible to stay in the air, let alone do any good with it when you use the keyboard. If you wanna be a good pilot, get a joystick or a game pad. Otherwise, leave the flying to those that have it. I have seen planes that desecrated the enemy and my forces as well when in the hands of good pilots. After all, airpower had a major role in the winning of WWll!

That pretty much sums up what you can drive, now..., just who can you be? Ok, let's look at that:

Scout
Assault
Anti-Tank
Medic
Engineer

Scout:
The scout is the sniper. He can also target for artillery. He is equipped with his rifle, pistol, knife and grenades. It rocks when you can't barely see your target, but when you sight in with the scope and put one in his noggin'.... WOO HOO!

Assault:
This is your "general" soldier. He carries the BAR (American). If you're like me, the fist couple of times you won't choose this guy. He only has 15 rounds per clip. However, this gun is more powerful and more accurate than any others except for the sniper rifle. I use this one most now. He carries a knife, machine gun, pistol, and grenades

Anti Tank:
Ok, this guy...., I dunno. I don't like him at all. You can run out of ammo trying to kill a tank with this thing. And it doesn't matter where you hit them. It takes too many shots. You can knock out a tank with less well-placed grenades. Disappointing. He carries a knife, Bazooka/Panzershrek, pistol and grenades.

Medic:
The medic is a handy guy to have around. Especially if you have a medic who actually likes to heal people and not just himself. When I'm a medic I heal everyone who isn't at 100% health level (remember this if you wanna be a medic). The medic (American) carries a .40 caliber machine gun that is deceptive in the fact that it holds a lot more shells than the BAR. BUT, the .40 cal is a lot less powerful and less accurate, so you burn up more ammo anyway. The medic carries a knife, pistol, machine gun, grenades, and a first-aid kit.

Engineer:
Like the medic, the engineer is handy to have around. He is the medic of the equipment. He can fix it all. His downfall..., his main weapon. It is a single shot bolt action rifle. And I swear he has a coffee break every time he chambers a round. But, with that aside he's a good trooper. Use him if you're addicted to runnin' equipment. And don't be afraid to fix other peoples stuff too!!!! He also carries the most..., a knife, pistol, rifle, toolbox, and landmines. Yup, landmines. You can lay 'em down for enemies. There is a downside to this too, however. They are WAY too easy to see!!

Sound

I thought the sound was very good also. Except for the occasional buzzing sound that would sometimes happen at the beginning of a battle and then go away.

Over all, Im sad that this game has so many bugs that I ended up taking it back. I reeely want a good version of this game. If it gets fixed, I'll defiantly buy it again.

Gameplay

There are 2 great things about this game. The tanks and the planes. Well the planes are almost great. Both I love.
But I bought this game thinking that the foot solder part of the game would be as good as "Medal of Honor" too. But was quickly disappointed. They can run, they can occupy a building, and that's about it. Once you get use to really good first person game play, well, your spoiled forever, and this doesn't measure up. You can't tell what your aiming at with any of your weapons. Nothing is accurate with the exception of the bazooka. And that only works well on vehicles. And you constantly get stuck on objects and can die from a very shot fall. There are many more buggy things going on too, all massing up into a giant ball of frustration, especially because you can see how good this game deserved to be.

Sound

The sound in the game is fairly good. As other reviewers have stated, sometimes you don't hear tanks and planes until they're on top of you. That said, they have included many finer things like the pinging of gravel in the fender wells of a jeep, the creeking of turrets, etc. I find that it is just fine for me.

Gameplay

I only play online MP, so that is the perspective from which I base this review.

There are several types of gameplay (five types of infantry, piloting ships and planes, and driving land vehicles), but each is fairly intuitively designed, and is easy to pick up on. My biggest gripe is when in 'infantry mode', using the wheel on your mouse to switch weapons does not behave as expected; for me this is a disadvantage as that is primarily how I switch weapons in FPS's. Hopefully a future patch will fix this issue.

Beyond that, gameplay is excellent. It causes a shudder to run down my spine when I'm firing on a tank with my zooka and the turrent turns to focus on me. The sight of bullets zinging all around you, barely missing their target, is chilling! When your comrades are falling to the machine gun fire of an enemy trooper, it is particularly gratifying to zoom in on his head and loose a fatal round.
