Product Description

Summary

This game is the best since GTA3 Came out on PC.
It is a WW2 simulation where you are either the Japanese or Americans. It is not just an ordinary first person shooter but a flight simulator as well. You are a soldier that is either the Japanese or American. You can fly anything from figter planes to torpedo bombers to B-29 Bombers, not only that you can either run around on foot or hop into a jeep, tank, or if you feel like it a huge gun emplacement, guess what you can take control of ships aswell! You can navigate a landing craft to Destroyers, submarines and even the Aircraft carrier itself. There are vast amounts of weapons on these ships from deck guns, to flack cannons, and depth charges. This is the ultimate in gaming experience.

What you need is a huge amount of friends to link up and then you verse each other, some take to the air taking out ground targets, some stay on the ground to capture enemy bases.

NOTE I have only played it over LAN with a couple of friends and i dont think it is anymore than a Multiplayer game.

It is like Medal of honor frontline meets Flight combat simulater 2

Sound

Sounds are very good and very true to the era. When you are flying and someone is firing AAA at you, you can hear the muffled bursts as they explode around you. The big guns on the battle cruiser are especially satisfying as they sound like, well, big ole guns! The game works well with surround sound and you are even able to here the direction of approaching aircraft.

Gameplay

I'm limiting this to the multiplayer demo as it is the one that counts. The game is team based (axis and allies) and consists of taking and controlling control points (flags). You can choose from a number of classes including assault, scout (sniper), medic, engineer. Each class has it's own weapons loadout and several special abilities. For instance, engineers can lay mines and dynamite charges and can repair vehicles. My only real complaint about the game is the lousy weapons that infantry has. Especially the BAR for the allies Assault class. It is worthless and you will find that most players will choose Medic instead as the Thompson is a much better weapon. But the real jewel in this game is the vehicles anyway. This is the first game I have ever seen that smoothly integrates vehicles and 1st person shooter, as well as a great flight simulater into the game. I would strongly reccommend a joystick for the flight sim part though, and that is another place where this game shines. You can individually set up the controls for each element of the game (infantry, flight, sea) and they dont interfere with each other. Also you can maneuver ships and use their onboard artillery to batter enemy positions as well as using them to launch landing craft for beach assaults. Also there are anti-aircraft batteries which can be manned to battle enemy aircraft. The flight sim is full featured without being overly complicated. You can choose pure fighters as well as torpedo bombers and dive bombers. Really, there is so much to do in this game that the strategies are endless.

Sound

Sound gets a perfect score... listening to a firefight from far away sounds so realistic you need to hear it for yourself.. exploins in close rage are ok but they sound awesome from far away.. sort of like a "thumb" as the shell hits and sand shoots up in the air. Weapon sounds are good but they could of been crafted better... there seems to be a boandry where... the weapons semm far away.. and inside of it there loud... could of been smoother.. but it still seems great.

Gameplay

Gameplay is cake, all controls are based on the wasd keys and all objects and vehciles are used using the "e" key. Tank combat is a A+.... very balanced... infantry can be harassed by tanks and tanks can be destroyed by planes.. the game has a VERY balanced scheme... u must see it to beleive it. A tank alone can go on a rampage and kill everything due to the fact that there is a anti-tank class role you can take on. A anti-tank soldier cant take on a infantry squad cuz all he has is a bazooka and a sidearm. A plane cant rule due to the fact that a plane cant capture a flag point and is easy to hide from as a infantry... only armor can truly suffer from planes. Sea has a support role and is superb for artillery strikes and anti-air tasks. So after observing these elements.... infantry or to be more braud... ground forces are the strongest and most valued.... this game evloves around that element and makes it so there will be no hogging or anything like that.. although there is the same ole plane hogging problems... but more often that not they fly around miss everything... get shot down or crash and the next person gets a plane. The game has a Medal of Honor feel... this is not a operation flashpoint game set in ww2 so rest assured there wil be some action. This game can be enjoyed by the most ppl ive ever seen in a FPS game sence Counter-Strike.

Sound

I've never paid much attention to sound, but I'm told it sounds great. You can hear the subtle cracks of gunfire in the far distance... the thunderous booms of artillery... plane engines revving overhead as the perform a tight manuever. I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't notice sound in a game. It should provide realistic ambience while remaining subtle and realistic. It definately does that.

Gameplay

Incredibly well balanced. I don't just mean Axis versus Allies, but also a perfect balance between vehicle and foot combat. Every vehicle serves a very solid purpose and feels incredibly realistic. The flight-combat alone would've been a great game... but combining tanks, jeeps, planes, submarines, battleships, carriers, et cetera provides an incredible experience. Words can't describe it. Plays VERY, VERY smooth on my system. (Granted, I have a new computer)

Sound

The sounds is very very good in my opinion. All the vehicle sounds are very life-like. The plane engines, the bombs, explosions, tank fire, artillary, machine guns. I think it is overlooked by alot of people, but it makes a difference...

Gameplay

The Gameplay is BF's strongest point, I think every one of the vehicles they have in the game have been done very well. They all look and feel as they should. Ive been in battle's from dogfights over an ocean infested with ships, Tank fleets hitting head on, explosions everywhere, to firing cannons from one battleship to another, and running through broken down cities with my squad of men fighting other troops. The varieties of the battles is amazing, and all unique. I think the recoil on the guns was done well, requiring skill to use them. The battles puts you in WW2 like no other game has...

Sound

The sound is problematic for some people. People with AC'97 onboard sound can suffer from "Chipmunk effect" if DX acceleration is turned up. Many people with SBLive 5.1 cards get bursts of static. I'm using an Audigy with latest Win2K drivers through Z-560's and to me it sounds great with hardware acceleration turned on. The positioning is great. My wife hates the pom-pom AA guns because my subwoofer shakes the floor!
The sound has been a little quirky, with occasional dropouts but it is usually fine for me.

Gameplay

Single player is essentially a bot-fest. I haven't really played much of it except for some
co-op on a LAN. When I finally got the server tweaked, it was actually pretty fun. There were some annoying pauses about every 5 seconds on the clients and the server machine (P4 1.8GHZ with 256 DDR/ WIN2k) was showing 100% CPU utilization with just the stand alone server running!
Hopefully, DICE will address that.
Anyway, multiplayer is where the game shines.
Because of huge bandwidth requirements, we may never see the advertised 64 player servers. 32 is plenty for me, though. I have played "conquest" mode mainly. Each team starts with a set amount of tickets. You deplete the other teams tickets by
capturing their spawn points and/or killing them.
There are different character classes such as "Scout" (snipes, calls in artillery strikes)
"Medic" Besides heal, he carries a sub-machine gun. "Assault" Armed with light machine gun (Bar 1918/ STG-44) "Anti-tank" Bazooka/Panzerschreck.
"Engineer" Plants/defuses mines, fixes machinery, plants explosives.
There are many different types of vehicles including tanks, APC's, jeeps, fighters and even a B-17 bomber. The 16 maps are very well done and range from Pacific islands to the North African desert to Stalingrad, Berlin, Arnhem and Ardennes.
It's hard to describe the battles, seeing an excellently modelled Tiger tank bearing down on you while planes roar overhead and artillery explodes. Seeing sand leak from punctured sandbags, seeing explosions through soldiers through the air. Seeing a plane take hits from AA fire and watching the pilot bail out. Just awesome. This one is a marriage wrecker, folks.

Summary

Well 120 bucks later and 256mb more ram seems to have helped quite a bit. I now have the game running smoother at a playable frame rate. And oh boy this game is a keeper. I love online games and this one is the best so far. Its set during WW2 obviosly, but it isnt a realistic game like Ghost recon or Operation flashpoint. It is action orientated which is what makes this game awesome to play. The battle takes place over large outdoor environments that range from desert, forest, to islands in the south pacific. You can commander a variety of vehicals from tanks, planes, to submarines and destroyers. Which is the real strength of the game. You can also strike out on foot in different classes which include antitank, scout, assault, medic, and engineer. Although the infantry part of the game leaves a little bit to be desired. the overall package is a blast to play.

Sound

The sound is not very good. I have a sb live card
and it seems to come in and out when I fly planes. When it works its fine. Again im waiting for a patch.

Gameplay

When I first loaded up the game on my PC it was really choppy and unplayable. This was quite disturbing as my pc surpasses the recommended system requirements. I had to upgrade my ram to 512mb to get it playable on my PC. The gameplay once up and running is nothing short of brilliant. As with all online games of this type your experience will vary depending on your teammates competence and teamwork. Sometimes you have to be patient to find a good server. But when you do you will be rewarded with the best teamplay online shooter out there. Tank battles rage on with airplanes dogfighting over head and bombing units on the ground its truly a sight to see. The vehicals are all easy to drive but the airplanes definatly need a joystick to master. When your onfoot its your usual fps but the aiming is tough with small arms fire. Scouts can call in artillery on targets but it requires a little teamwork with a gunner which can be hard to coordinate. Medics can heal teamates, and engineers can fix gun emplacements lay mines, and defuse mines. All character types can pilot all vehicals. You can man antiaircraft guns, gun batteries on ships, and bunker machineguns. There are so many different ways to play that it never gets boring.

Summary

In a word AWESOME. I got DSL service into my house just for this game. Me and my friends from work have been hooked on the multiplayer demo for over a month now. We are all total addicts to the full version. Six of us are averaging 3 to 4 hours per night fighting WW2 all over again. The action is awesome, but the unique thing about the game is that you have to work as a team. There is a lot of very subtle strategy to this game when you are working as a team. We coordinate our attacks and try to use combined arms whenever possible. We are able to do this by having a mix of people (usually 2 assualt, 2 anit-tank, 1 medic, and 1 engineer).
I have read all the previous reviewers comments and I have to disagree that the infantry men play no part in the game. I can't tell you how many times a gang of infantry has surrounded my tank and shelled me into oblivion or my wounded tank was repaired by an engineer or I a medic has walked up to me and healed my wounds so that I can keep up the good fight.

Sound

The sound is good. The sound effects for the vehicles and weapons are very realistic. I especially like the tanks. My only complaint here is the in/out sound during the movies and in-game cut scenes.

Gameplay

The game is a bandwidth hog at this stage and there are some minor things that need to be tweaked with the game but I feel that EA is being very repsonsive to player feedback. If you are having trouble with slow servers, try connecting to the EA sponsored servers (search for EAB on the internet, they have over a hundred servers up at all times). EA and DICE have already released a retail patch that fixes several bugs from the demo. The biggest of all is the that the jeep can no longer ram a tank head on and explode it. I'm sure other patches will be coming to reduce bandwidth requirements. Everyone had the same issues with cstrike and unreal when they first came out. Give the developers a little time to address issues.

Add-on wish list
1.) Regular soldier category with a semi-auto rifle and 5 grenades
2.) deformable terrain (see graphics section below)
3.) gore settings (see graphics section below)
4.) customizable weapons packs for the soldier like in MOHAA multiplayer
5.) Server settings to limit fog in a game, spawn rate of vehicles, and count destroying enemy vehicles towards tickets
6.) not allow enemy to repair vehicles in your base in the maps that have vehicle repair facilities
7.) Water should not damage vehicles unless they are completely submerged. Tanks, jeeps, and APCs can drive through water without hurting them
8.) rolling a jeep while in it should kill/hurt the people inside

Sound

Infantry weapons could stand to be beefed up. Some of the rifles are a bit lacking in their audio punch. However all vehicle and their weapons sounds are done pretty well.
I've also heard of people having issues with the sound. Again I cannot comment as I have not experienced problems. The voice commands in the native language are a nice touch.

Gameplay

Great gameplay. The vehicles are the real strong point. Tank battles, dogfights, bombing runs on the enemy camp etc.
The infantry aspects and weapons could have been implemented a bit better, but I think it's a bit lacking because emphasis was placed on vehicles. I'm sure this will be addressed in future patches.
Also, for a game which seems to be targeted at teamwork and teamplay, it seems odd that you dont get points for capturing/holding check points. This lends itself to more individualism than teamplay. Again something that should be addressed in future patch. However the game play is extremely addictive. The map mix is well rounded in size and variation. Did I mention that some of these maps are HUGE.

Sound

Sound is also very good. Bullets flying, explosions, teammates calling for help, planes flying overhead (when you are driving a tank in the middle of the desert and you hear a plane coming, you pray that its a friendly, and as the sound gets closer you can't help but cringe and hope the next sound won't be your tank bursting into flames). So only good things to say about sound. However, hardware acceleration for sound just seems to slow the game, as well as make it buggy, while adding nothing to the quality, so don't turn that option on!

Gameplay

This is a more strategic FPS, so teamplay and smart moves will provide a maximum of fun. If you are the "run&gun" type, you will go down fast and be very frustrated. I personnaly get very frustrated playing games like Ghost Recon, and prefer games such as half-life/counterstrike, UT, RTCW, etc, and I'm loving Battlefield 1942 (its Team Fortress or RTCW with more possibilities). There is somethign for everyone in this game:
-control a battleship or a destroyer and pound your ennemies with awesome firepower (and if the scouts do their job properly and give you targets this is great fun)
-jump in jeeps, tanks, half-tracks, etc.
-pilot fighter planes and bombers (one annoying trend is on some servers no one seems to be playing, everyone is waiting for the planes to respawn...once the novelty effect wears off it'll be better).
-Plus you can choose amongst various classes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. If you happen to be a scout or an engineer and an ennemy assault type closes on you...you're dead meat unless one of your teammates saves your butt).

GAMEPLAY is semi-realistic and calls for good tactical thinking. For instance, a heavy tank's armor is barely dented by frontal attack. However, a well placed rocket in the back will be devastating. Crouching, hiding, riding quickly through ennemy lines in a jeep, jumping from a plane and parachuting your way to an isolated ennemy base to take it over are all part of playing the game well. Although there are capture the flag and deathmatch modes, the standard conquest mode is excellent and makes for very dynamic gameplay. The communication system is easy and convenient.
Slowdown: For some reasons some people seem to have problems with slowdowns, independently of the speed of their processor or graphic card. It seems to be mostly due to two things: lack of RAM or hardware sound acceleration.
Bottom line: Despite occasional lag (especially when it comes to ships or planes), I am thoroughly enjoying this game. I also forgot to mention the wide array of maps that call for differents strategies and put you in very different atmospheres (i.e.grey and dirty Berlin compared to sunny Wake Island)

Sound

When it works its pretty outstanding. I have noticed on occasion that it sometimes seems to drop bits and pieces out but it happens so seldom that I can overlook it (I just don't expect a game to work right out of the box anymore). With a good sound system it really helps to emmerse you in the game

Gameplay

Very entertaining as I said in the Overall section. I have played both Multi and single player missions. While the computer AI seems to be reasonably intelligent there is no substitute for the reactions of real human players. I run a cable modem (doesn't everybody) and have noticed the lag to be minimal. But of course in my opinion high speed internet gaming is still in its infancy and some lag is to be expected. I like the variation of the maps, surprising I find myself drawn towards some of the more vast desert expanses ala El Alamein. This is where the game really shines. You can be out in the middle of what you think is nowhere and run across an enemy patrol then have to duke it out for your life. Outstanding. Team play is definitely a must if you want to survive... NO RAMBOS here.

Summary

I've noticed, first off, that some previous posters have complained about bugs within the game's playability. This is normal for two reasons: 1) All games initially get released with a few bugs here and there, hence the patches that are put out a few weeks/months after the get-go...and 2) These posters are running machines with less than high quality graphic cards or low amounts of memory. THIS GAME REQUIRES HIGH MEMORY AND AT THE VERY LEAST, A GEFORCE 3 CARD. Even with my GeForce ti-4600, I occasionally get a few split second freezes, but for the most part, it runs fine.

That said, let me just make it clear that this is one of the most involving and exciting multiplayer games I've ever had the pleasure of popping into my PC. The single player missions are actually a good training grounds for the online play, and the online play itself (providing that your teammates aren't a band of drooling morons) is downright amazing.

Sound

Not as great as MOHAA's but still pretty neat. I love the sound of a rocket as it wooshes right by you. Get a 5.1 digital sound compatible speaker set for the best effect!

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to Medal of Honor's, with a far wider realm of possibilities. Controls are pretty much the same (except you get to hit the ground on your belly...helpful for sniping), but the map size allows for a great selection of attack angles, locations, etc. My suggestion is to pair up with a buddy with one as a sniper and the other as an anti tank or assault soldier. Find a good spot, and you should become a formidable force.

As for sniping...occasionally you'll miss completely when you're too far away from a target (in real conditions, high winds will do just that to your aim), but a little closer and a head shot will take him down. Running while shooting a machine gun decreases accuracy...just like in real life...and so on and so forth.

The emphasis here is the TEAM play. You, as a soldier, can take out 30 enemies with your weapon, but your team will still lose if they don't work together to take over the enemy's territory. If you're looking for a gung-ho do-it-all-yourself online game, try MOHAA. If you're a team killer by nature, then I suggest you jump into a pit of syphillitic snakes.
