Summary This is totally the best game ever, whoever hates this game should be shot. Since there is no category for it ill explain the storyline here. You play Max Payne, an f.b.i who comes home one day to realize his wife and child is murdered. It is apparently because the biggest mob boss Don Punchiano (I forgot how to spell his name) ordered a few guys on the new Valkyr to go kill them. So after he changes to d.e.a he gets a trafficking call and is asked to meet up with his partner Alex, and it turns out all he was put there was to get framed, and from there the story takes a whole bunch twists and turns in a noir comic-book story telling. I totally cant wait for next one to come out (they finally got a date for it which is october 15 2003) graphics are nothing short of totally awesome. faces look real for one (even though their mouths dont move when they talk). but also the environment reacts the way its supposed to. when you shoot a wall plaster comes out, when you run through newspaper it flies. plus the comic book drawings are totally great in the noir kind of lookSound Sound is great, I love that theme song. Guns sound like they are supposed to and voice acting is right up there with Metal Gear Solid and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.Gameplay The gameplay is the best part, you get some pretty cool but normal guns (beretta, pump shotgun, etc.) and you go through awesome places like a hotel and a subway. Plus, Max Payne is the coolest cop I ever seen, I'd be surprised if anyone else could look cooler in a leather jacket. Its your usual shoot 'em up game only way way cooler. for one is the famous bullet-time. The coolest idea ever. All you do is right click and you either jump matrix-like in slo-mo and or just stand there in slo-mo, but while everything is going slow your aim still goes normal speed which really helps like when your not sure whats behind a door and need time to aim.Would you like to Comment? Summary First let me say I can't imagine why Max Payne is not a "Gamers Choice" pick. This game was revolutionary when it came out. I instantly become a zombie after I started to play. Man, everything about the game captivated me to continue on level after level.Sound Not much to say, it fit perfectly.Gameplay Okay, this is the first FPS that I felt really bad ass playing. I got into the role of Max. It was kind of a cross between the Crow (1st one, props!!!) and a cracked out Andy Sipowitz from NYPD Blue. Max limps from to much damage, he looks at clues when you get close, and reloads guns. I chuckeled evily as I blasted a junky in the bathroom stall, and smiled wickedely as I blew apart five guys in a room. The graphic novel did nothing but enhance the feel of the game. You encounter everything from the classic gangster to the devil worshipping psycho. And, of course, in the end it turns out to be the establishment that F*!Ks you over. Max has a variety of guns to choose from, plus melee weaponry to bash fools heads in. HA! No one is safe from dudes fury! I suggest that everyone play this game.Would you like to Comment? Summary My initial impression of "Max Payne" was a very good one. I waited and waited for the titles' release date from the first day I heard of it. I wasn't into PC gaming back when it was originally announced in the year of 1997 but rather when it was hyped up in early 2001. The game was said to be released in late July of that very year; I could hardly contain my excitement. I had read about the spectacular graphics (powered by the Max-FX engine), the non-stop gun fights, the detailed physics, and of course, the Bullet Time feature. Being able to slow down time while watching items explode in graphic detail put in front of a top-of-the-line visual engine was something I could hardly wait to get my hands on. I distinctly remember upon "Max Payne's" first week of release that it was priced at close to $35.00 at Best Buy, on sale mind you. I immediately purchased a copy, installed it, and was privileged enough to play one the greatest action games ever created. I can honestly say that the four year wait was more than worth it.What one may have purchased this game for is the Bullet Time. You can try to beat around the bush and pretend that the actual gameplay is marvelous. With that said, they may also say that what truly brings this title into its own are the stunning particle effects. But deep inside of every gamer there is that special place specifically for the Bullet Time feature. If it wasn't for this aspect of "Max Payne" there wouldn't be much to differentiate it from other action games (other than the still great graphics). Running into a room, pressing either the shift key or right mouse button instantly puts Max into a "Matrix"-like slow-motion action sequence that allows him to aim in real-time and dispatch of many enemies at one time. The sight of bullets flying by Max's head, just barely missing his appendages and his cranium is an understatement to be called exciting. Muzzle flashes from various weapons are going off and every second another shell casing hits the floor slowly and another bullet just misses its mark. Max slides across the floor, dodging every shot, and by the time he's back on his feet every enemy that was once standing mightily is dispatched in a pool of blood and splattered brain matter. I apologize if I got off-topic with that last mini paragraph but to truly explain the Bullet Time feature is to give an example of its genius. Not only does it give you an advantage over insurmountable odds, but it's also one of the greatest ideas to be utilized in a PC game of all time. I never tire of slowing time down to a crawl and jumping through the air while firing off rounds from a shotgun. The Remedy Entertainment team (the games' developer) apparently saw too many John Woo films throughout their lifetime as his influence is all over the gameplay. Everything from the double-fisted shooting to the acrobatic stunts that have Max flying backwards and shooting pistol rounds at anything that moves is something that would come directly from his influence. It's an extremely exciting adrenaline rush that should put any fan of action games into Heaven for twelve hours. The pure innovation that went into just how much can be accomplished by simply shooting is astounding. It's rare that I don't become bored with at least any gaming title, but "Max Payne," unsurprisingly I might add, never pulled me into a state of redundancy. You won't find any obligatory stealth missions for the sake of variety or any side "objectives" such as protecting a hostage or escorting a character through a particular section without getting him killed. Its straight forward run-and-gun action at it's finest from the beginning until the climactic conclusion. Of course it may be linear but it's of a GOOD linear quality. If a game is fun and enjoyable to play, open ended features and linearity seem to blend in with one another. "Max Payne" is one such title. Simply jumping into a slow-motion action frenzy accompanied by exploding beverage bottles, pieces of plaster flying about, and broken glass showering Max as he sends bullets flying into a room full of enemies are jaw-dropping; I can't say it enough at just how fun the Bullet Time feature is. It gives the game its identity and also manages to bring also the great action sequences from excellent to just plain stunning. You may just run, press a switch, shoot, run some more, get to the exit and repeat, but I'll be damned if it isn't done in a stylish, inventive, innovative, and downright enjoyable manner. You couldn't ask for much more in an action game than what is delivered here. Even if you COULD complain about a lack of variety you would be too wrapped up in the sheer amount of noir-ish gunplay and faint-inducing stunts to truly mind. The gameplay is made up of a collage of diving maneuvers and double-fisted gunfights; I couldn't ask for anything less. One may find fault in simply shooting everything that moves, but I can't say that it's pure fun to partake in enough. I can't remember the last time I was this addicted to a game. Even over a year since its initial release date, I can still find myself going on "Max Payne" sprees simply based on the adrenaline-based nature of it's gameplay features alone. The other feature that was hyped up just as much as the "Matrix"-like slow-motion gunfights were the graphical achievements of this particular game. The particle effects have had they're fair share of publicity and have been amongst "Max Payne's" most talked about features. I concur with all of that simply based on how the visuals complement the action overall; that's more than including the particle effects and John Woo feel that the game exudes. It drips stylish gun battles and cinematic effects at every sweep of a hallway and every turn of a corner. To say that it would be more than a shame to not give credit to a feature that truly brings it to life would be lowering "Max Payne's" value to those who haven't played it yet. Great visuals do not a good game make, but when accompanied by magnificient gameplay, they often times go hand in hand to craft a truly classic, memorable, fully realized gaming title. This is one such game. Richly detailed environments are littered with torn pieces of wallpaper, floors cluttered with shot out glass and destroyed insides of a fire extinguisher spread over the dirtied carpet. Of course this may not sound like much when simply reading it it's hard to fully describe "Max Payne" on paper. Actually seeing the smallest most intricate details of this title are its most brilliant. You can easily see the changes of facial expressions every time an enemy NPC pulls a trigger as if to signify the power of the recoil of the gun or the excitement felt when pulling the trigger. It's moments like this that are found in action films that add to the fun factor and the general feel. As objects explode into a firey display of sparks and blue flames, you can see pieces of what's left flying right past Max as the added T&L Lighting is utilized fully. Portions of Max are lit up brightly or dimly to detail the impact of the explosion or simply how he faces the light. Shadows can be seen under his eyes in lowly lit environments but can be changed in a split second from his own muzzle flash. The detail found on Max Payne himself is beyond astounding. Wrinkles can be seen in his undershirt, the buttons on his leather jacket are fully visible, and stubble marks can be clearly seen on his face as well as the crease marks around his cheeks. His hair seems to be parted according to each individual strand rather than simply a skin exported on the model of his head. His shoes seem worn and of age to say that he's had them for quite awhile. To top this off, his leather jacket sways as he moves as do his pants which move with the wind to reveal rolled, white socks. Even over a year after its release it's still close to being top of the line. The "co-stars" so to speak aren't as detailed. That's not to say that they're mediocre in any way, however. Compared to the level of texture color, vibrancy, and high resolution found on Max Payne himself, the sheer number of enemies and detailed that would have needed to be added would have been a challenge on a processor to craft them after his level of detail. The textures are easily classified as high-res and can be seen that the color and texture work is top-notch. The same factors apply to them as Max; the facial work is amazing. The photo-realistic faces (which were actually scanned and placed onto the definitive character models) are of great quality and I would be hard pressed to find better. Although the color palette may not be as broad and as groundbreaking, the amount of sheer detail from buttons to blank stares to facial expressions, all the way to the spots of matter on shoes to the cloth-like look of shirts and pairs of pants is simply amazing. The quality of the hair textures still stands; the colors are magnificent and the different shades add quite a bit of variety to the overall character model. These can definitely be seen as creations that took a lot of time to fully craft. The finished product is great to simply sit back and watch as much as it is to shoot at. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of the visual quality as the particle effects and environmental detail is something I've only briefly explained. The locales are just as good ,if not better, than the character models and they're accompanying details. From gloomy subway stations all the way to glorious representations of skyscraper-height corporate businesses, it all looks excellent. The level of detailed added into the many different textures and attention to detail simply astounds me, even today. Specks of plaster coming off of the walls in slum hotels to wall paper being ripped away, images of cheap seedy hotel rooms, and excellent representations of bullet-riddled portions of random rooms is pure gaming bliss. The usage of hi-res textures and a complete disregard of everything even remotely not achieving graphical excellence make this a more than beautiful game. When the character models all placed into these well constructed, well-detailed and well-attired locales in-game, the results are beautiful. The architectural design at hand is unbelievable; it ranges from curved, smooth surfaces to caved-in cement-dotted walkways. Destroyed sections of the locations you visit are nothing less than spectacular and truly benefits from great geometric modeling. I know the visual section is long-winded but almost complete. I can't go any further into the review with trying my best to describe the particle effects to the reader. Simply shooting the enemy when in Bullet Time might appear to be good enough, but doing it while seeing stray shots shatter glass, puncture water dispensers, and shatter bottles makes it all the much better. Walls can be seen crumbling in slow-motion and even soda cans dispense liquid in the same instance. The sheer level of destruction puts the cinematic feel of "Max Payne" over-the-top and makes it much more than enjoyable to play. I can only describe it as directing your own John Woo-like action movie spanning twelve hours. The detail put into the particle textures and their aftermath makes it much more visually mesmerizing. One can't imagine how a game can even get any better. Of course with a legendary title such as this it's almost certain that nearly every aspect will be similarly great. The audio category is certainly no different as it's just as appraised as the other aspects of this game. Beginning with the voice acting, I was blown away by the talent exhibited. The voice actor who portrayed Max Payne himself (whose name escapes me at this moment) is beyond reproach as this legendary gaming character. He exhibits emotion upon first introducing the character and completely lacks any by the games end. The development of the character is brought through in his acting well as it seems as if Max has become desensitized to the world of violence and deceit. The monotone speaking style also plays a big factor in portraying Max as a cold-hearted individual, it's also more than apparent that this is due to past events. From simply lending your voice to a character and having the results come out this good is unbelievable. Of course it wouldn't be a surprise if I told you that the other actors hired didn't quite match that performance. They still do a remarkable job. Personality oozes out of the spectacular dialogue and it's TRULY then that the NPC's are brought to life. The believable New York accents lend a realistic quality to the characters portrayed and also lend a load of needed personality. The professional grade quality and talent that shines through at every word spoken is something that is rarely achieved. The dialogue is equally as good and truly makes the game feel as if it's a cinematic classic. Be sure to pull your ears away from the voice acting long enough to fully appreciate the sound effects as well. The realistic nature of the guns fired and even footsteps are done in crystal clarity. Everything is fully audible and as crisp as the next added audio segment. Although one-liners are repeated and can draw on the nerves eventually, it rarely affects gameplay when considering just how much perfection is found in this title. The sound of ricocheting bullets and explosions are also top-notch and blend in with the sound of snow storms and gunshots flawlessly. It seems almost unbelievable to find a game that has this much going for it and not a single flaw noted. Even the music is above listenable and fits well with the action sequences, moments of dread, and the overall atmosphere that can be felt throughout the duration of this game. You won't have any trouble controlling this classic either. The default setup is great for everybody from beginners to veteran action gamers. Of course maneuverability benefits from few key presses; the intuitive placement makes it easier than I believe it should be to control. Jumping into Bullet Time and firing is as easy as tying yours shoes while jumping ledges while randomly switching weapons is just as easy. I can't put it in a much more elementary explanation other than to say it's almost close to perfect. Alas we reach an aspect that "Max Payne" doesn't dominate; the NPC AI. They simply charge you without any form of tactical variety utilized to possibly elude you to an untimely demise. The most advanced form of intelligence they exert is to walk backwards while stepping from side to side while firing at you. This does make the game slightly easier due to the fact that the enemies have a good amount of accuracy and don't include flanking, taking a different route of attack, etc... But it also takes away from the more challenging nature of it as well. The enemies are unmemorable in the way of intelligent opposition, but then again, that doesn't detract from the fun factor in any way at all. The auto-adjusting difficulty does make up for the lack of AI in many parts of the game due to the fact that the random challenges are a welcome change from simply selecting easy, medium, hard, etc... and tend to create more of a challenge when a lack of AI is involved. You won't find any multiplayer support here whatsoever but who really gives a crap?!? The classic single player game will set the paradigm for which all future shooters will be set. Not since "Half-Life" and "Mafia" has a single player experience been this good. Is "Max Payne" compulsory for any fan of action games? By all means, yes. It would be a challenge for me to find a game that is this much fun to play, looks this good, sounds this great, features so many gameplay-enhancing aspects, and manages to get nearly everything right. If you're an action gamer you can't pass up the opportunity to own this game at any cost (within reason). It's the closest any action game has come to reaching pure perfection. You may be asking yourself how that can even be, but upon first playing it up until the spectacular ending, you'll understand why every word of this review is oozing positivity. Nothing To Lose. That's what the box says you're in store for. I bought this game when it first came out and beat it then but I beat it as fast as I possibly could and didn't really appreciate it at the time for the great game it is. I just beat it again, this time savoring the goodness. The set-up has our hero, Max Payne, coming home one day to find his idyllic happy family life shattered forever. From that point on, Max, hell-bent on vengeance, sets out to find and punish those responsible. The story is driven by comic book styled layouts and in-game cutscenes. The gameplay itself is a third-person shooter where you take Max on a tour of carnage through New York City, leaving a wake of chalk outlines behind you. This game attempts successfully to convey a stylish story through the marriage of these elements. The content at times is extremely graphic and adult oriented at times, further adding to the feeling that your watching the world's longest R rated movie. In the world of Max Payne, it's always night and it's always cold, and there's nothing to keep a man going but pain and revenge. A lot has been made of the voice acting and the dialogue. The voice acting, in my opinion is mediocre and the dialog is wildly inconsistent. There are times when Max's stream of conciousness narration really rings true. There are other times when he says or thinks things that noone ever really has in real life. I sometimes felt like this game was a big pot of stew, with everything from The Matrix to Duke Nukem thrown all together. Despite this I never felt the game was derivitave or uninspired. In all honesty, the game tries hard to be a homage to film noir classics and modern graphic novels, with it's gritty anti-hero and convoluted conspiracy but it isn't the story or the voice acting that sets this game apart. It's the revolutionary gameplay. Sound The sound is very good to great. Some of the voice acting is mediocre but the woman who plays Max's wife screams and cries almost too realistically, lending a lot of authenticity to the intro and the two nightmare drug sequences. In a parking garage, a black minivan, equipped with the standard minigun, menaces Max but ultimately explodes in a fireball. The sound of the hot air whooshing past you was very realistic. I almost felt the heat. I also almost felt the cold as the wind and the snow blows out in the streets.Overall, this is great game. I would give it a 4.5 if I could. It's a lot of little flaws that keep it from perfection. If you haven't played this game yet and you like John Woo films and read "Guns and Ammo", this game was made with you in mind. Gameplay What sets this game apart from most of the crop of cookie-cutter shooter rip-offs, is an element borrowed from The Matrix, "Bullet Time". Bullet Time is an ability the game gives you to slow time to a crawl for a second or so. Visually, this allows for breathtaking moments of sheer gaming ecstacy.I usually used it immediately as I would go into a dive to my left or my right as I was shooting at multiple heavily-armed opponents. It allows you to aim and fire while you literally see bullets and shotgun pellets fly all around you. Bad guys jerk and shiver as you spray them with ammo from an arsenal of real world weapons, finally flying backwards and slumping where they die. Tiles chip, glass shatters, boxes break, propane cylinders explode, paintings fall from the walls, leaves fly from plants and, most of all, blood smatters and splatters. As amazing as bullet time is, the developers limit your use of it. You can only do it so many times, measured by a little vial next to your health. This game is all about action. There are several memorable sequences, especially toward the end, where you will be shooting at as many as five or six opponents while they do their best to end your torment permanently. Max Payne has a lot of minor issues. Like a lot of third person games, it has camera problems when your back is against something. The sniper rifle zoom button is the same as the use button, making opening doors and hitting switches while the sniper rifle is equipped impossible. There are a couple of other little complaints here and there but nothing that really detracts from the overall experience. Your path through New York is very linear and after beating Grand Theft Auto 3 and reading about Morrowind, this is disappointing. There is nothing too original in the locations either. A nightclub, a hotel, a warehouse on top of a government installation, a shipyard and a submarine, a mafioso's mansion and a corporate office building. Two things stood out there. I was impressed with the chance to return to the hotel where I had only recently slaughtered armies of ne'erdowells, cross police tape and revel in the aftermath. Bullet holes everywhere and chalk outlines and more bad guys to kill. That was an interesting twist. I also thought the design of the Aesir corporations office building was really imaginitive. Very artistic. I wish I worked in an office that nice. It was a little disappointing that the "bosses" are tougher than everyone else by virtue of needing to be shot seven thousand times. There should have been a more clever way of ramping up their difficulty but then again, other than grenades or point blank shotgun blasts, Max has to be shot seven thousand times or so as well. I guess I better not complain TOO much about that... Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary I bought this game back when it was released on July the 27th of 01, I didn't sleep the night before and the damn Americans already had it for 2 days...but the wait was well worth it :)Even now it's still on my Hard-Drive thanks to the Kung Fu Edition MOD by Ken_Y, to think I even loved the original without the MOD, it looks stupid now! Anyone that hasn't tried the Kung Fu MOD hasn't played Max Payne. It's a third person action shooter with a pretty well thought out story 2 it, don't expect to be sneaking and solving puzzles but you'll be shooting your way out like Chow Yun Fat :p Fun gauranteed! Sound This is superb.A couple of examples: The wind will blow around your ears while your on a sky-scraper, the bullet going past will give you a damn hearth-attack and so so soooo much more :) Gameplay The Gameplay is very good, considering it's different then any other shooter, the bullet-time (slows down time like in the matrix) really brings this game a special thing but even without it, it would've been a great shoot 'em up.Sadly Multiplayer isn't possible with this and thus it's Single-Player only but with some MODS it'll never die :) Would you like to Comment? Hollywood movie quality. The rest of the sounds are good and some pretty decent techno music comes on during some action scenes which make this game play out like an jon woo action flick with more depth and story to it.Gameplay Gameplay is the best aspect of this game. They have a feature in this game called bullet time. It is a limited resource that replenishes itself for every kill you get. When you activate bullet time you slow down time, everything moves slow except for your aiming reticule. The game has good fluid controls, and has fun fighting scenes. Summary Bought it because it looked fun, heard it was good, and it was cheap. I am SO glad that I bought it, its awesome. Best single player game I've played. GTA3 is just about as good, but their different types of games so hard to compare. It's a great shooter and its in 3rd person... so a change from the FPS's.Sound Great sound. Nothing special to talk about, but overall good sound. The guns sound good (when you fire of course)Gameplay Best gameplay ever! I love the bullet time, just awesome. THe actual game is noe kinda bland esp. after playing Max Payne with hundreds of user made mods that let you play as Luke or Blade. Many weapons to be found in Max Payne and even more with the mods out there. There is something for every shooter fan out there in this game. If you have not at least borrowed this game yet do so or kill yourself either one will suffice!Sound The guns are really amazing in sound geralitys. Music is okay but it adds to the suspense however it does get repetitive. Talking is good but their mouths should have moved when they talked.Gameplay The gameplay consists of just killing bad guys but the mods really make the game much better. One mod makes the game a lot like Alice and Half Life you must kill weird looking monsters in a well rendered world inside and outside with great rock music playing in the background. But actually in the game you must snipe terrorists and kill many different looking men which is a cool feature.Would you like to Comment? In fact, it is the only single player game I have actually enjoyed playing. The only reson I didn't give this game perfect 5's is because it could have been much better.Sound The sound it nothing special.Gameplay The gameplay is fun and addicting whith a well-developed story to add onto it. This game changed my whole perspective on 3rd person shooters because of its Matrix-style "slow mo" add-on. Hitting the slow mo key when entering a terrorist-filled room allows the player to sort out locations of the terrorists while shooting them, which greatly helps you keep from dieing. Also, watching bullets fly into your oppenents bodies is a real blast. This game is also one of the first games to achieve bullet delay (you shoot and the bullet takes some time to reach a far target). However, it is very innacurate because there are only 3 bullet delay settings. One being point blank from an object, and when you shoot it instantly hits the target. Two being you shoot and object about 15 feet away and it takes 3/4 a second to reach the target. And three, you shoot at a target about 40 feet away and it takes 1 1/2 seconds to reach the location. This was very frusterating for me because at 15 feet away from a target the bullet would not take 3/4 seconds to reach the target, it would take about 1/3 a second. Even at 35 feet of range it is still exactly the same delay. The gameplay is much like Half-Life's movie-style gamplay where you encounter something or hit a switch and a cut cene-type thing happens while you are still playing. Would you like to Comment? This game is right up there with the others like, gta 3, metal gear 2,virtual fighter 4, etc. Other than a few flaws, this game is superb in every way. A must-buy for hard-core gamers of 3rd person shooters.Sound Just wonderful. Every gunshot,voice-overs,and other sounds are well put together.Gameplay Well not simple at first, but practice and you should be just fine. It will be even better if you had a joystick or controller for your pc. You should get by on the keyboard nevertheless. But why cant you just move around by simply pressing the d-pad up,down, left and right?Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Buy it or you rather hang yourself for letting this one go by. Nough said.Sound Sound is good. nothing extraordinary.Gameplay Well, it's a first person shooter. The good thing about this one; and it is the only one to have that feature, is the Matrix like effect. When in a hot situation, you can modify the flow of time for a short period (a couple of seconds per level) so that you see and dodge the incoming bullets. Yours are travelling at the "normal" speed. The visual and gameplay effect are just unbelievable.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary This game had some nice ads on TV, and it looked pretty good, but it really isn't anything. Sure bullet time is fun to watch for the first few times, but there isn't anything else original about the game. Very repetitive and dull. Nothing to make this game any better than all the other thousand or so FPS. Although this is 3rd person. This game is not worth buying. Its so boring and repetitive I have given up and I'm still on the first part of the four. Sound I'm trying to remember if there's any music. Only thing I remember are the gun shots and "Payne, Payne, Payne".Gameplay Gameplay is fun at first. Bullet-time is orignal and helpful at times. Movement, shooting all standard like any other shoot em' up. But where are the big guns. All of them are so boring. Shotgun, ok. Uzi, ok. Where the hell are the M-16s and AK-47s. I know this is a cop seeking revenge game, so it won't be realistic for him or the local gangster to have big time military weapons, but often that is huge attraction to a game. If you play Half-Life, CS, Medal of Honor, Wolfenstien any other quality shooting game, you'll see that they have big nice guns, which do a lot of damage. Yeah those involve terrorists or armies or monsters, but the bullet-time ain't so realistic either. Each level is exactly the same. Boring surroundings. Again it suits the game because its in a run down part of NYC, but still you just can't sell a game without something intersting to look at. The baddies are all the same. What a load of crap. They come running to you when they shouldn't be able to see you. They do the same ol' thing over and over again. "It's Payne. Kill him. Kill him", you go take your shotgun and blow them away. Next person. 99.99999% of the people in the game have to be killed by you. Same surroundings, same baddies. No replay value here. Would you like to Comment? Summary This is a landmark game, and like all landmark games, I expect it to be surpassed by later games. Bullet time is quite simply one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a game. There is a good variety of weapons but not opponents, and the game is a little too short. The story was compelling and nicely earns its M rating. This can also be a system hog in certain spots when a lot of bullets are flying because of the way it keeps track of so many projectiles. There are a lot of interesting Easter eggs that are worth tracking down.Sound The sound was great, very immersive. I was never annoyed by the music, though it could have used some while loading levels. The sound was handled extremely well during bullet time.Gameplay Perhaps the biggest complaint about this game is its length. I've played through it twice and the second time it took only 12 hours. The opponents tend to be predictable and repetitive, and the really cool weapons come way too close to the end. What saves it is bullet time, the ability to slow time so Max can dodge, aim, and shoot better than opponents. It is simply awesome. When using the sniper rifle, riding along with the bullet is also a must-see. A dream and drug induced state, while a change from the regular game, was not fun. There is a Matrix mod for the game that is worth trying.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Excellent action-driven game! Actually, I like the story alot. The story's well written and, even with the unavoidable "clichés" of cop-stories, realistic. You'll get stuck to your computer like a fly in glue on Max Payne. The general feeling of Max Payne is one of a dark, oppresive battle for survival in an underground world that doesn't want you to live long enough to uncover it's secrets and let you clean Max's name. |
