Sound

The sounds effects are very well done. The voice acting is top-notch, despite the somewhat corny dialogue. Gunshots, though not very realistic, do sound convincing enough. Overall however, it is the music that really makes the game shine. From the title screen to the night-clubs, the music for this game is perfect. Gritty and dark or upbeat and heartpounding in all the right places. If you've seen the E3 trailer, then you all probably know what I mean...great music choices all around.

The only pitfall in the sound department is that there is no option for EAX. I was a disappointed with this at first, but it matters little when you really get into the game. It would have been a nice addition though, as it seems almost an afterthought in most games today.

Gameplay

In all honesty, there is not much to the gameplay of Max Payne. It simply breaks-down to a multitude of gunbattles in which our protagonist is for the most part out-manned and out-gunned. Of course, Max has an ace up his sleeve. He has the unique ability to look at a situation and react to it faster than the normal man, as if he has reached a higher level of awareness.

What this means gamewise is that Max has the ability to slow down any situation at any given time. With the simple push of a button, the entire game drops down to about 1/4th normal speed. This not only allows Max to aim better, but also allows him to dodge bullets to a certain degree. The catch is that Max has a very limited amount of time to use this ability. However, the more baddies that Max takes down, the more "bullet-time" he will recieve to help him.

As I stated before, other than going from room to room blasting the hell out of everything, there is not much else to this title. All events are tied together with a somewhat decent plot of murder and revenge. Throughout the game, the player is treated, not only to in-engine cut-scenes, but some nice (though sometimes corny) comic-book style storyboards. All in all, a good job storywise.

The game controls are remeniscent to that of just about any 1st/3rd person shooter out on the market today. The mouse will make Max turn and look around. The classic WASD configuration is also put to good use here. The only control problems I really had was that the mouse was a little too smooth on the reaction for my tastes. As a matter of fact, it felt as if the mouse was almost delayed to a degree. In a game such as this, I would think that very sharp, precise mouse reaction would be a given. Hopefully this will be fixed in a patch.

Some will say that the whole gunfight/slow-mo thing will get really dull really quick. Well, the developers took this into account and have added a "Time Crisis" style mode that unlocks after beating the game, to keep your interest held. Lord knows I'll be playing this game over and over for a long time.

Some other things that should be noted here are that there is NO multiplayer in Max Payne (how the hell could that ever work anyway?). Also, there is area specific damage, but there will be no severed limbs or gibbing. I actually liked their decision to do this. I rather liked seeing the baddies get flung full force across a room instead of exploding into meat chucks when a grenade blast hits them...just buy the game and you'll see what I mean.

Sound

The sound in this game is pretty cool. It's nothing terribly exciting but it does sound good. Explosions sound good enough to leave you temporarley suprised and the guns sound realistic. The voice acting is okay. Somtimes Max's melodrome voice dosen't fit well with the anamations in the comic book like scenes. Other times the in game comments will seem strage and obvious. The is cool and fits in nicley with the game. In bullet time the sound effects are awesome and add to the overall feel of the game.

Gameplay

The gameplay is simalar to other action games yet has enough new concepts to keep a gamer hooked. Bullet may seem like it will make the game a walk in the park but don't fooled by this. Most of the time Max is greatly outnumbered. Bullet time is used to lessen the odd a little but it must be used with accuarcy and skill or will not be much help. Max must coordinate his attack by diving out of cover and then taking out a handful of punks in mid air. And don't think bullet time lasts forever, it drains when used and can only be replenished by killing more enemies. And of coure if bullet time gets to be boreing you can always through a Molotov Cocktail at a group of enemies and avoid a full fledged fire fight. This plus innovative feature the game has of automaticly adjusting the difficulty of the game based on your skill will keep in the center of action and never make you feel to overwhelmed. I beleieve gameplay won't get to repetive but it could been jazzed up by some kind of skill system with different abilities. Max's abilities are limited to shooting and blowing stuff up. Overall the gameplay will still have on the edge of your seat with it's over the edge action.

Sound

The sound is, dare say, the most realistic I've heard in a PC game ever. Guns sound like they would in real life, police officers sound like police officers, and you can pick up on the chatter of bad guys throughout the game, some of which can be humorous. Definitely an excellent part of the game which does not detract from gameplay in the least.

Gameplay

The gameplay is your classic third-person shooter. If you've ever played a first or third person shooter in your life, you will catch on very quickly. The only real new advent is the introducement of "bullet-time". A feature so excellent, so amazing, and so downright fun, that I'm surprised that no game developer has implemented it so well. Although Perfect Dark on N64, which did have a slow-motion powerup, introduced players to slow-mo gameplay, using that powerup was an annoyance. In Max Payne, the similar effect is used, and it is the best part of the game. Though the game is basically shooting everything that moves, there are points where you will have to press buttons, unlock doors, and solve parts of the mystery. Which brings in the comic-book part of the game, in which the story unfolds via a comic book. An ingenious idea that I have not ever seen before in a video game. The story is an interesting one and the ending is near perfect. However, there is one distinct part of the story which should not have been put in the game. In two different levels, Max is in a dream-like state, wandering around. In what is supposed to boost the story actually is an annoying set of mazes and jumping puzzles. It is the only real annoyance of the game, but I'll say is: Through it all, the game is definitely worth playing.

Sound

The sound is UNBELIEVABLE.The sounds also contribute to the super real feeling of this game. You can hear the wind, people talking behind doors, etc..The best part though, is the music.Sometimes you will come into a room, and the music volume goes through the roof and you know a big gun fight is about to happen.Nothing beats the loude fast music while the room is being torn apart with bullets.Lots of unnecesary sound details that make it fun.The voices are cheesy, but super clear.Explosions and crashes are deafening. The theme music is beautiful too.Right when you start the game and come to the main menu, the music lets you know you have just bought a great game.

Gameplay

Best part of the game. How it should always be.You can dive, roll, dive backwards, jump, and in super dramatic slow motion. You will actually be DODGING BULLETS.And you will see them fly past you in hordes. You will be shooting while rolling, diving,jumping,etc..The AI is great! And you will get killed very quickly if you mess around. If you need to load your gun,its already too late.Theres no climbing, etc..This guy is a cop, not Laura Croft. Not too many maze like levels, not much looking for switches. The levels are amazing to look at.Snow, wind, and the lighting is the best ive ever seen.Very few flaws, and you won't notice any of them because youll be having too much fun. There is no multiplayer, but I could care less.Id be out of my mind to complain.

Summary

Better then Half-life, kingpin, and soldier of fortune! Every once in a while a great game comes along. Most of the time there are games that are filled with potential but then end up being disappointments. Take Black and White, Seemed like it would be a great game but after about an hour of hearing “we need more homes” I threw it into the bad game drawer and haven’t played it since. But Max Payne is different, Max Payne is a game that is filled with a lot of potential and it delivers. At first I thought that it seemed too good to be true but after playing it I’ve seen that they pull off every thing they say they will pull off in the previews. The game play is nothing short of astonishing. It was great on my PC but for fun I went to a guys house I know and since he is a graphic designer he has a high-end pc with a graphic card that has over 500 Megs. I tweaked the game up to its max potential, adding things such as filtering and smoothing the edges. Although it demanded a lot from the card, it was almost like playing a movie. The thing was so damn good. On my pc the 800mhz dell with 32 megs of video the graphics were still great but when ever I tried tweaking them up to the max the game would slow to a crewel but even at a lower definition 900ish x 700ish x 32. The game is still spectacular and the graphics are better then on the box. All this and the game still kept a good story line. There have been games before like Vampire with great graphics decent game play but horrible story lines. Not max Payne. Max Payne was pure enjoyment and worth every red cent. I have a feeling I’ll be playing this game for a long time to come. If you have a computer over the minimum req. buy this game. You will not regret it.

Sound

MP's sound effects perfectly compliment the graphics, guns sound great, the music sets the mood, and explosions sound very real. Some of the voice acting in my opinion could use the work, but for the most part it is very well done.

Another thing that deserves mention is the fact that I played Max Payne with NO BUGS whatsoever. I read of others online that have had trouble, but Remedy is soon to release a patch to correct this. Good job Remedy.

So to some it up, Max Payne is an EXCELLENT game. Like it says on the box, other games promise to put you in an action movie, Max Payne actually does.

Gameplay

The game play of MP (Max Payne) is astounding; bullet time features add massive amounts of fun to the game. I think even without BT (bullet time) MP would still be a great game. For instance, Max can be running down a hallway, suddenly two goons pop out a door way, just tap the BT button and a direction you want to doge, then slowly fly past the enemy pumping round after round into their worthless bodies. It is truly worth the price of admission alone. MP's game play is truly original and very "John Woo". There are even a few John Woo references in the game, I'll leave those for you to find.
MP is a VERY story driven shooter, divided into 3 parts and multiple chapters per part. In between chapters and sometimes during a conversation, comic book like pages will appear, with the characters talking etc. The pages simply show the characters with dialog bubbles above their head. This all seems to keep you very interested in the plot and waiting to see what turns up next.
Now MP is a single player only game, but in my opinion this makes sense, it would be virtually impossible to synchronize all the players while each of them control their own bullet time. It wouldn't be pretty. MP's single player mode for the average gamer should last 10-15 hours. This is somewhat short compared to other shooters such as Half Life. To keep you interested, a level editor is included. Also you can unlock other modes of play for the single player game by completing others.

Summary

I must say that I was expecting something different. Not better or worse, just different. After the insane amounts of attention the game garnered prior to it's release, it is fair to say that expectations are running high for Max Payne. I thought the game would have a little bit of actual investigation/adventure-type elements that would be enhanced by surreal action sequences.
After my first run through the initial chapters though, I was a bit disappointed. In a way I wanted this game to play a bit less like a full-out action game and more like an action/adventure. Then again, there was something so engrossing about the constant adrenaline rush I got out of every single gun fight, that I decided to start over and take the game for what it offers and not try to judge if it ressembled what I had concieved the game would be.
Once I put myself in this mind-set, I was in gaming heaven.

Sound

With a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 in my system, I find the sounds in the game good and sometimes even great. Positional audio is used to full effect here, and it successfully creates atmosphere and immersion. All of the voice acting is miles above what is found in games like Soldier of Fortune, Half Life, or any of the top selling games that have recently hit the market. The new yorker accent is at times exaggerated, but never annoying.
The sounds of the weapons themselves is accurate, with distinct sounds for all the different hardware. Overall, the sound is what you'd expect from an action game with the exception of the high quality voice acting, which is setting new standards in the genre as far as I am concerned (which probably doesn't even mean anything anyway, but hey, it's my opinion...).
Overall the sound supports the graphics just fine.
It's not the title's main selling feature, but it gets the job done and at times, the quality may even surprise you when you are not expecting it to do so.

Gameplay

Max Payne has style. This is not a game about mindless shooting even if initially it may appear to be so. It is a game carved out of passion. You see, there are many innovative features like the "bullet-time" effect (which lets you manipulate your actions in slow motion) and photorealistic graphics, that will without a doubt help the game get off the shelves and bring some cash into the developer's pockets. But there is more to this game than just the technical stuff. What all of those features do is add a sense of style and immersion unseen in any action game to date. Not only do the gun fights look superb, but the fact that you are controlling every minute detail in how the fights actually evolve is something that cannot be described by the use of mere words, it should be experienced by anyone who is even remoteley interested in gaming as a form of entertainment. For those of us who see gaming as more than a casual hobby and more like a passion, read on.
Blasting away at a seemingly endless amount of thugs can be a lot of fun to a lot of people, but to others, the blasting and shooting has to have some sort of reasoning behind it to keep the interest flowing. Max Payne justifies every single bullet that tears through every gangsters' chest with a captivating and motivating story that unfolds through both standard and more innovative ways. By using a blend of cutscenes and comic book-style story boards, the plot is told through Max's subjective point of view and is supported with unbelievable voice acting and a cast of characters so despicable, they'll make you want to replay their battle encounters just so you can rejoice in the bliss of capping them for the third time. We are talking low life mafia puppets all the way up to city Kingpins waging wars against international drug lords. The story here is top notch and quite fitting for a summer movie flick. It's the way the story is told that is so refreshing though. You never, not even for one second, forget the fact that Remedy was trying to create the ultimate action game, your character can't even walk which means you are always in a rush. But at every single turn a new piece of the puzzle is revealed and the story just constantly builds up with out letting the player guess for one second why it is he's killing all of these thugs.
A typical level basically consists of finding an exit or character and bringing some lead down on the fools that attempt to stand between you and your goals. It's just the way you get to the end of a level that is so satisfying. You'll want to replay a couple just to carry out different approaches to certain fights.
But all is not good in the land of Payne. The initial retail release is known to contian some game crashing bugs that to some, have proven to be fatal and left the game unplayable until a patch is ready for download. Also, while the AI is challenging in that the game actually adjusts it's difficulty according to your performance, more than once I've seen a thug do the dirty work for me and shoot his buddy in the back while he could have capped me when I landed defenseless after dodging bullets John Woo style. Also, while the animation for many of the actions is smooth and looks great, I see a lot of missing stuff that should have been there. For instance, Max will never grab a ledge and uses the same motions to flush a toilet as to pick up a note or book.
Overall though, the game is a superb piece of software that should not be overlooked and is a strong contender for action game of the year.

Sound

The sounds in the game really accompanied the graphics in the best way possible. When those bullets hit the wall, you hear the cracking of the individual tiles, when you shoot an enemy, you hear him scream.Best of all,the game detects the 3D sound card you have automatically and integrates them into the game.So whether it's EAX or A3D,you hear it all in the game. And everything has it's own unique sound.Every gun, every greande, every person all had their own unique sounds, none were reused like you see happen in other games.Great voice acting was also implemented into the game. The voices of the characters sounded real and were very well staged. The music also went along with the game well.

Gameplay

As for gameplay. The controls were very easy to learn. If you ever play Half-Life,you know the controls already.Performance was a question a lot of people are faced with.Unfortunatley,I have no say in this as it runs great on my P4 1.7Ghz with 512Mb Ram and 64Mb video card.I run it in 1024x768 32-bit mode and it is smooth as silk. The only thing I was REALLY mad about,is that there was NO MULTIPLAYER!If this game would have been relased with multiplayer support,I'd love it even more because it would have a higher replay value and you'd have lots of fun shooting your friends in ultra-high quality 3D graphics.Of course, the new bullet-time mode makes up for that. The new "Matrix" type feel this game has will have you coming back for more :)

Sound

The sound is well-done for a game of this kind. I've got a SoundBlaster Live! Value card and a 4.1 system and it sounds beautiful. The environmental audio is done to a "t" and can really assist you in some portions. The explosions always result in a satisfying treat for the subwoofer, the pangs of bullets against various surfaces each sound different, and even the music is beautiful and sets the mood of the game.

Gameplay

The gameplay is both fast and furious as well as slow and smooth. The much-anticipated "bullet-time" feature activates with just a tap of the right mouse button and allows the player to slow down time temporarily much like in THE MATRIX and SWORDFISH. The rest of the game world is in slow-mo and while your actions are also, you can freely move, twist completely around in mid-air, fire shots with perfectly rendered individual bullets, and otherwise line up perfect shots. The weapons are all perfectly done and react realisticly for the most part. The major thing is that after you're done with it once you can play through again in modes like "Hard-Boiled" which are much more difficult. It also adds the "New York Minute" mode which allows for fast and furious gameplay as you've never seen it. You start out with one minute to play and every enemy you kill adds ten seconds. The result is amazing. The replay value is exceptional.

Sound

The sound is amazing. Although the sound is very good. A game can't be perfect. There alays has to be a weak point. This is not weak, but compared to the otther aspects of the game, it is not very good. The music is amazing! The explosions sound like they actually did tests to make the explosions and record them on tape. The sound is controlled by Kartsy from a finland band, and it wasn't a bad choice on Remedy's part!

Gameplay

The gameplay is the best part of the game! With all the gun fighting, and the bullet time is what I always use on an enemy. It helps you stay alive and is the best friggin' feature any action will ever have! What also is cool. There is a lot of enemies. There has to be like, atleast 2 in every room, which also makes the game quite hard. If you are a beginner and don't ever use cheats. YOU should not buy it. The gameplay is unexpectly easy to run on crappy PC's too, so don't think about it. Go download 3D Mark 2001 from www.madonion.com If you get atleast 900, your good for Max Payne!

Sound

Sound is also excellent.

Gameplay

This game reminded me if one of my favorite games: Hitman. For those of you who own this title, you can see your character on the screen, i.e. a third person shooter. This feature is important as it allows you to see and manipulate you character during the bullet time feature. It is easy to see that the game designers spent a lot of time thinking how a gamer could interact with the environment, including buying a pop from the pop machine only to shoot it and watch the pop ooze out. You can also do things like open drawers, flush toliets, and pick up items. The majority of the time, as far as interaction goes however, is how bullets react with the environment. Everything is either destructible or can be damaged by your weapons. Using bullet time allows you to see the process in action. For example, if you fire while using bullet time, you will see your bullets hit the enemy as well as the wall behind him, causing fragments of the wall to break off and fall to the ground.
The AI of the enemies is also important. Enemies will move and shoot, dodge your fire (if they can), seek cover, and will keep trying to take you out unless you get them first. Most of have seen the problems with enemies with substandard AI, which does not help the enjoyment of the game.

Sound

In the game (this is interactive as well as sound) I was standing in an elavator...some crappy elavator music was killing me so I looked up blew out the speaker and no more music :)
But the music in this game is appropriate not overly used but put to good use. The voice acting is very good some of the best in a game to date. The sound effects are AWOSOME hearing people screaming when you pull out a gun. V (designer drug) addicts talking to themselvs. you can hear enemies standing around and having conversations...amazing!

Gameplay

Max Payne introduces a new gameplay innovation called "Bullet Time" Which slows gameplay while you either jump (dive) in one of eight directions, or stand still all while going in slow motion. Activating BT is very easy and only takes you a few times before you can kill 4 enemies with one BT dive. The storyline in Max Payne is pretty good, and gets you involved. It should be noted that it also makes this game VERY linear...not a bad thing. Also almost everything in the enviornment is interactive. It is like duke nukem, you can use all the sinks toilets lights, cabinets, shoot out lights.
