Sound

This game is lucky in that Halo is American made, meaning that there wasnt much difficulty in redoing the voiceovers from Japanese to English. Voice acting was very good, especially that of Master Chief's and the Covenant. I also loved the sounds for each weapon and vehicle. We play this game on surround sound to take advantage of the Dobly Digital Sound and lemme just say WOW again.

Bottomline: If you own an XBox, you sure better own this game. If you dont own an XBox, go out and buy one so you can own this game.

Gameplay

Two Words: Wow. I dont think ive ever played a shooting game before where the controls came so easily to me. Targeting, weapon switches, secondary weapons, and vehicles are all easily utilized thanks to the much hated Xbox controller. Single player mode is fun but tends to get repetitiveas you advance through the storyline. Multiplayer on the other hand is absolutely amazing. Going through story mode with my brother was so much more fun than by myself and of course there cant be enuff said about the amount of depth put in the battle and team battle modes. This is probably the only game allowing such multiplayer depth without being online capable.

Summary

The first time I had ever played this game was at my cousin's house with my dad. He had played before and said it was awesome, and some of the guys I know said it was awesome, but I had to find out for myself. I have played tons of different kinds of games. Only difference is that I've grown up with a Playstation, so I wasn't that good with the controller at first, but as soon as I customized my own player and got down to it, I was getting pretty good. Me and my dad played for hours that night. The next day my cousin sold his Xbox and everything to us for $100. After the first week of playing it, I was hooked. Soon I was better than my dad. I was the best in the family. Soon I was playing the game. I started out on Easy since I had just gotten used to it. Soon I had beaten that and I had moved onto Normal. One day I went with my dad to the neighbors. I was the only girl there out of 16 guys! That multi-player is so awesome! Whether you're playing Capture the Flag, or playing Slayer Pro it is so cool. In Blood Gulch when you play Iron Capture the Flag and you're in the Scorpion, it is so fun. The graphics are so sweet. The sound is wicked cool. The story Plot, is un-heard-of. And it is very well thought up. My friends all are hooked on PS2 but once they played Halo once they are always coming over to play. I wouldn't be surprised if they beg their parents for an Xbox soon. Halo is the best game I have ever and probably will ever play. Whether you're sitting there with a shotgun to an alien's head or sitting at the base guarding the flag. This is a great game.

Sound

I love it! Surround sound is great when playing this game. I love it how the aliens talk and sometimes shriek. And when it comes down to battling there nothing like the sounds of aliens blowing up, guns firing, aliens shrieking, and butt of your gun being smashed into some alien's head. Yeah I think i's alright.

Gameplay

Well I do have to say it takes some getting used to. You may be shaky at first but then once you get the hang of it you go full out. There's no saying what you can do. Whether you're 10 and playing on Easy or 30 and playing against your buddies it is great for all ages. When you do Multiplayer you never know where you're going to end up sometimes. There are some hidden places where you can go. Then the actual gameplay, sometimes you can get turned around, but usually you can tell where you have or haven't been. Then there's co-op play. If you or your buddy dies they can come back as long as you/they stay alive. That's what is great. And you have infinite life. Plus, if you get sick of your buddy you can just blow his head-off with a shotgun and he'll just come back to life. Another plus, is that you can create your own guy, and you can create your own game. I love it.

Summary

Well what can be said about Halo that hasn’t already been said? We have here on VGR.com already 321 reviews on it, it has won several awards as game of the year, and is toted to be the biggest things since Half-Life, so what else can be said about it? Well one thing for sure is Halo is a very convincing game that’s for sure.

For the longest of time, I rejected the thought of getting a Xbox. It wasn’t because I’m a fanboy or anything of such nature, in fact I own my fair share of all systems, but I just could not really validate a reason to buy one just yet. However, with the passing of the recent 2003 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 as it is known) Microsoft dropped the price of the Xbox down to $179.99. I figured what better time than to just go ahead and pick one up, and of course I got Halo to go with it. Well after spending much, MUCH time with Halo I’ve been thoroughly convinced that it is indeed one of the best first-person shooters ever made, if not one of the best games ever made. Put simply, Halo does for the Xbox what Goldeneye did for the N64.

Sound

The harmonious chanting:

Halo’s music is also stunning. The music kicks in with epic orchestrated composure when the action is intense and the voice acting is dead-on. All the marines provide great one-liners while fighting and rarely is the same line of dialogue heard twice. All actors fit the part and nothing sounds forced or overtly cheesy, and the dialogue and sounds given from the Covenant is downright hilarious. Also, for those with surround sound Halo supports Dolby 5.1 and the sound effects rock and roar with bullets ripping through the air and grenades exploding. Halo’s sounds are stunning.

The epic that is Halo:

Halo is easily on par with the greatest of games. With its stellar presentation Halo does no wrong. Everything about it is superb and ultimately it is a pure blast to play whether by yourself or with others. It provides great graphics, gameplay, and sounds all rolled into one package and can make the non-believers of the Xbox (like I once was) a believer. It’s one of the best FPS since the groundbreaking Half-Life, and the fact that Halo has still yet to be beat in the almost 2 years it has been out is a feat in itself.

Gameplay

Not to be confused with that thing over angels heads:

You will play the now recognized hero (and trademark for the Xbox) the Master Chief, a bonafide cyborg badass called upon to cause a little chaos to the alien species called the “Covenant”. You “awaken” on a ship and are given the basic controls to help you “stretch-out”, however the ship is soon attacked by the Covenant. They began slaughtering the civilians and troops on the ship, and it’s up to you to kick some butt, save some lives, and get out of there. Definitely a rude-awakening indeed.

Thereafter you will find your escape-pod crash land on the planet Halo and from there on this is where the game will take place. As its name suggests Halo is a ring-shaped planet that resembles earth in a pseudo sort-of way. However, this is definitely one of the best aspects of Halo. The construction of level design, layout, and length of each level is superbly done. You’ll explore mountains, rivers, snowy plains, underground industrial caves, and many other locals that the atmosphere Halo gives is unrivaled by any other game on the market. You’ll never feel bored searching around in levels, and no two levels ever repeat themselves in design. The game continues through 10 HUGE levels all told with a thoughtful and provocative narrative that it easily rivals that of the all mighty Half-Life and provides a better story and experience than even most movies.

But the meat and potatoes of Halo is all in the action, and Halo’s delivers in doses. Unlike other FPS, Halo does not allow you to carry a plethora of weapons with you. Although it does have several weapons to choose from throughout your journey, Halo presents realism by allowing you to only carry two guns and two types of grenades at the same time. Although this may sound silly to some, this is really a simply concept turned brilliant by the strategy required to determine which gun is the right gun for the situation. Not only this, but the guns are creatively crafted and players will certainty pick and choose favorites to carry with them at all times.

Once armed and ready, it’s time to get onto killing and again Halo scores big. The enemy AI is superb and definitely one of the best seen in a game yet. They dodge you bullets, run for cover, sneak up on you, and cleverly even commit bombing suicide to take you out. This provides a tough challenge throughout, especially if you kick up the games many different difficulties (take them on in Legendary and see you ass get tossed back at you!). Not only is the enemy AI great, but the Ally AI is just as fantastic. One mission in particular really shows this off as you storm the beach D-day style with your trusty marines by your side and you watch as they react realistically to the situation they are in. They perform just as cleverly as the alien’s do, and to watch your marines go overkill on the aliens can even bring a sadistic smile to your face.

The single player rocks, but Halo doesn’t just end there no, no, it boast a multiplayer mode so extravagant to call it grandiose is an understatement. Firstly, players can play through the stellar campaign mode two-player co-op and this alone is worthy of a purchase. The strategy and good-times to be had during two-player co-op mode is so much fun I would withdraw from sleeping to play just another hour. However, it doesn’t end there players can take on a 4 player deathmatch with more options than you can shake a stick at to have a romping time. Yet still it does not end there. Those determined and willing enough, can raise the ante using a few system link cables and TV’s to play not only 4, not only 8, not only 12, but up to 16 players all at once! The replay value brought from all these mulitplayer options is reason enough to easily buy and Xbox for.

Sound

Halo is a winner in the sound department. With great voice acting, for humans and aliens alike, adding to the badass movie feel. Though some of the weapon sounds are a little flat...

Gameplay

Gameplay, now this is where Halo comes through a cut above. Never has combat in a first-person shooter been so much fun. And one of the main reasons for that is exellent enemy A.I., expecially on the higher difficulty levels. The Covenent(the alien force bent on shuffling you loose the mortal coil...)will put up one hell of a fight. They flank you, ambush you, and attack you in packs. The smaller, weaker enemys, instead of facing you alone will run to get help, they will aid larger more powerful enemys, and use a varitey of weapons remarkably effectivly. You toss a Plasma Grenade, that will stick to an enemy, and watch that enemy either panic before his enevitable death, or see him start running after you tring to take you with him. Though the A.I. for the Covenent is great, about midway though that game a new kind of enemy is thrust upon you...and my god are they annoying! There plan seems to be to run at you or stand and shoot at you and little else. And the little crawling pod things are the only thing I really HATE about Halo. The weapons in the game are another one of it's strong points. From human weapons like the Assault Rifle, Shotgun, Pistol, and Rocket Launcher, to alien weapons like the Plasma Rifle and Pistol, and the Needler, the game is in no short supply of fire power. Each weapon serves it's own purpose, and the fact that the game only lets you carry two weapons at a time(which adds to the realism and reduces the "One Man Army" feel that plauges most FSPs)adds a bit of strategy to the game in choosing what weapons you will carry into a given situation. And that god for the melee attack that can be done with any weapon and is very usefull. And last, but not least, the vehicles. Although a bit underused, the are a blast and definatly one of the reasons that set Halo above the rest.

Summary

This game is defenatly the best first person shooter I have ever seen on a console to date, as well as the best launch title on a console ever. Yeah, thats not saying much, but words can be deceiving. Sure, many people will slag it for being short, or repetitive in later levels, but heres a solution, if you dont like those levels, dont play em! The greatest thing is co-op, I spent 30 minutes in a death-match in a level, (The Silent Cotographer) and there were bodys everywhere, countless bodys, laying in heaps and blood strewn across the ground, the best gaming moment ever for me. The second best gaming moment for me was driving (on the same level) with a friend in a couple of warthogs and ramming each other head on, we went like 20-80 feet in the air, and when we knocked each other out, we would run each other over or lob grenades at each other.
My third greatest gaming moment EVER was when I was attemting to cross a bridge that apeared and dissapeared constantly, me and my friend thought we had to cross it, everytime one would fail, the other shot them and he respawned to the top location, by the end there were about 50 bodys in a huge pile, we got mad because we realized we didnt have to do it, but it was pretty fun doing it, and dang funny afterward.

9.8/10

Sound

Sound is good, good music use and awseome voices for enemys and allies, for example, I saw a soldier run up to a dead body and start shooting it and screaming stuff, ive seen that a few times, and each time he usually says something different. Nothing beats throwing a plasma grenade at a grunt and watching him scream and run around going "NOT AGIAN!!!" or "THERE EVERYWHERE!!!", and the scream as they fly through the air too, and watching their little arms waving when they explode is simply awe inspiring.

9.2/10

Gameplay

Controls are solid and comforatable, framerate leaves a bit to be desired in co-op, but at least it doesent make me ill like Medol of Hounor. Really short in game load times, which many people mistake for framerate problems, but are in fact not, although there are a few hiccups, like when you beat a dead alien to a bloody pulp and layer the blood, then look at it and walk over it back and forth, thats a good way to get sick.
9.0/10

Sound

Bah, I wouldn't care when it's all this bad.

Gameplay

Ok, so a friend convinced me to buy Xbox for Halo alone, because it would be one of the best experiences I can have in gaming life. I was curious because I am a hardcore PC gamer with an insanely powerful computer rig that handles anything which means, insane graphics. Boy was he wrong in my case.
This game is so lame. You start off in a ship with some really bad character models instructing you. After a really lame tutorial like introduction, it gets into things going bad. Um? Half Life anyone? I already played this sort of thing in 1998 on my PC back then. If it took this long for a console to make a game ripoff of that, then it's sad.
Controls are ok once you get used to them which didn't take me long. Eh, I don't got much to say, if there is a good, the combat with your teammates isn't so bad though then again, I've seen stuff like this only more insane in Unreal Tournament original for PC and that was back in...Oh forget it, I've already seen all this and better.
