Halo: Combat Evolved for Xbox Videos >>
Rating Reviewed By Chris MoreyFrom Marshall, Arkansas Review Date 02/05/2003 Overall Rating ![]() 3 of 5 Rate this review? Summary I come from the generation of the original NES, and I think people of my age have a better understanding of what games of the year are. Thus said, Halo is a very colorful and visual game. But when I see 5 out of 5 reviews, I know it's some younger kids who haven't realized that FPS games are basically all the same. However this is one of the rather more enjoyable FPS and get get addicting at times during multiplayer battles. IN other words you'll be bribing your friends to stay with pizza and beer. But overal is it worth that fifty dollar tag that hasn't come down yet? I say unless you can't wait for Halo , when the price will probably drop, go ahead an buy it. But personally I think it's only worth about thirty bucks.Sound Sound is clean and the music scores are very nice. But this isn't a stealth game or any other type that requires a expensive surround sound theater. Ifn you got the surround, good, if you don't. you'll still be immersed enough to enjoy the game.Gameplay Loading times are very quick, but if you want to get technical, most games are for the x box and PS2. And the two weapon capacity is only there for annoyance purposes. Seriously, I'm already suspending my hold on reality by pretending to be a soilder of the future, but I can't see defeating a alien colony if Earth's advanced tecnology won't allow me to hold more than two weapons. The controls just take a little bit to get used to. It may take longer for new gamers or to the novice players of the X Box. Bottomline: Everyone thought N64 Controlers we horrific, but they got used to it and it's the same with the X Box. It will more than likey become second nature to blast your enemies away. Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Simply put, this is one of the best games ever made for any platform pc too. If you havent played Halo for xbox I pitty you, it is a really addictive, story driven, beautiful, FPS package. Fantastic story driven single player plus an amazing multiplayer component will keep you playing for god knows how long. Being an avid player of console and myself owning an xbox and a way powerfull 2.8GHZ I can simply not wait for the pc version of Halo to come out. Given the pc's power and potential stability etc, im hoping Halo pc will be better. But how could that be??? Microsoft, Bungie oh why do you have to make us wait till winter 2003 for your beloved Halo 2. We all know its going to be the best game ever and your sales will rake in billions. So why not do us a favour and release Halo 2 late this summer. Please. Instead of Q42003 or god forbid 2004. We want this game to come out when Doom 3 does for pc. July ish. Sound Seiously, this area isnt really lacking. Thesound is crisp and clear. Awesome quality. Sound is a 4.5 out of 5. But I dont really pay attention to sound when playing the game. Its really really good though. Gameplay Oh my god do i really have to go through the stupendous outstanding gameplay. Just read all the other reviews. Take my word for it. Totally awesome. Summary (Note: I was a very avid PC Gamer until a while ago, so my review will probably be a little biased) One of the BEST story driven FPS's for a console today. ALthough it's story is pretty average(Humans vs. Aliens in a race for a super weapon), it combines great visuals, good music, and excellent gameplay into one package that is bound to go down in console history. However, I wouldn't say that this game is REVOLUTIONARY...games like Half-Life and Deus Ex are revolutionary, for their interactivity, AI intelligence, story, etc....Halo is merely an excellent game. But don't let that stop you from buying this game...if you're a fan of first person shooters, get this game(even tho it's still 50 bucks, and Microsoft isn't willing to put it on the Platinum Hits list, grrr.....)...you will NOT regret it!!Sound I'm not EXACTLY sure if this game takes advantage of XBOX's sound capabilities, but this game has good music and great sound effects(the comments between the aliens are really funny!)Gameplay Your basic FPS, with a few little things thrown in:) For one thing, the AI in this game is abnormally good...enemies know how to react realistically in a situation, and squadmates fight alongside you with some skill, tho I'm not sure I saw too much teamwork among my enemies or my friends(i.e., Halflife's grunts). Another highlight are the vehicles...simply amazing....the control scheme works well, and the transition from vehicle combat to FPS and vice versa is seamless....great! The control scheme(overall) is pretty good...although I still would prefer to use a mouse and keyboard...Would you like to Comment? Summary Iv'e been addicted to First Person Shooters ever since I played the first Doom. At the time I thought it was great. Ever since then then I have been trying FPS titles and loving them. Like; Jedi Knight 1 and 2, the Medal of Honor Seies and much more. So when I heard about Halo, naturally I couldnt wait to get it. So I did. And not only is it the best FPS title so far, it is one of the best titles out of any game. The vehicles and the Counter and Co-Op multiplayer modes are terrific. I was very pleased with this game and I highly anticipate Halo 2.Sound The sound, where to begin. How about the weapons. Each and every weapon has it's own unique shooting sound which makes it very life-like. Also zooming in and out with certain weapon makes realistic sounds. Second is the enviornmet. When walking on certain types of terrain, the sounds you get are different. From the crunching of snow to the roaring of a warthog (military jeep that you can ride around in) engine. Flawless. I'm not going to say that enemy sounds are also flawless because I have never heard aliens. But if I did here aliens, that is probably what they would sound like. One more word. Incredible.Gameplay The gameplay in this game is unbelievable. Enemy A.I. is some of the best seen in any game. And the levels are as fun as they are challenging. And I never had a problem with it being slow in some areas or taking a long time to load. The only 3 problems I had with the gameplay is that it can get very hard sometimes. Also, I think there should be more weapons and levels. Other than those three things, to me, this game is flawless in the area of gameplay.Would you like to Comment? I was expecting the second coming with all the hype this game got. Is a good game? Very much so. Best game ever? hardly. Great graphics? Pretty much. Gameplay? Pretty damned good (better in driving portions).Good story? I guess, if you haven't played Dues Ex. What really really urked me was the repetivte enemies. Once you blow through the first couple of levels you know what to expect. Until the annoying Flood. then after two levels of them you know what to expect. Sound Very good. the sounds of battle really engulf you here.OK i gave the game a good review for its technical points. in those aspects it's top notch. It's just that i felt more compelled to play games like the original Red Faction and Deus Ex because i enjoyed the story and the characters. With halo i beat it just because I wanted to beat it. Oh yeah, the ending SUCKS, by the way. Gameplay I will admit that this is First Person Shooting at its finest. Very good controls and very little to no annoying platform jumping which was one of the reason I gave up on the genre before N64's Goldeneye. The AI is good. The use of 2 weapons is inspired, and the vehicles were fun excpet for the Banshee. Thank God that it wasn't need to often. Would you like to Comment? The world of Halo takes you by storm, not letting you know hat's over the next ridge or around the corner. An extraordinary campaign mode that will leave you begging for more. Every aspect of the game is among the best I have ever seen. There is more action and suspense than your daily recommended intake. This is a no harse crap game that should be taken serious because of the incredible action and suspense. Danger lurks everywhere. The multiplayer modes rival only those of TIme Splitters 2. Sound, graphics, and gameplay are the best in the business. The difficulty levels test amateurs and professionals in all aspects of the game.Sound It's like you're right there as the Master Chief himself.Gameplay Gameplay was the best I've ever played and all my friends would agree. The multiplayer modes are the most fun you can have on any multiplayer game. Playing with only 2 players is fun but gets boring after a while. 4-8 players is much more fun and 16 players is the most insane mode of any type of gameplay of any game that you will ever play.Would you like to Comment? Summary I am a big first person shooter fan and I must say that Halo is a near perfect game. Everything from the action, to the story...Halo is the game to buy. You cannot be an Xbox owner without owning a copy of Halo.Sound Sound is amazing. I found myself downloading all the songs on KaZaA shortly after. The music goes great with the action, so much that you feel powerful and just play the game naturally. The Sound is definitly one of the best parts of the game. TRUST ME! BUY THIS GAME! IT IS TRULEY THE GREATEST GAME EVER MADE!Gameplay Game Play is excellent for Halo. The gore and the action is superb. The moment I played this game, I could not put it down. The game is even coming out with a sequal and and a book prequal! The book: Halo: Fall of Reach, informed my on everything in the game. The story is simple. You are a highly advanced soldier in the year 2500. Your job is to keep the enemy from finding the location of earth. But before you can start, you crash land on Halo. Then you...Well, You have to play the game to experience the game. Let's just say the ending was AMAZING! There are no glitches what so ever and Halo is a game you definitley buy. Don't evern rent it, Buy it! You'll be glad you did!Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Excellent game. Get it if you don't have it.Sound Great, realistic sound fx. I even like most of the music.Gameplay I'm only up to the 4th chapter. It's very exciting to play. Cool and varied landscapes, etc. Kinda easy on normal.Best to use alien weapons or any human weapon w/scope. Wider variety of aliens would be better. I use the alternate control setting where you strafe w/the right stick. I also use a PS1 controller (better than the s controller), but had to reduce the sensitivity one notch. Everything was great, most of all the story line and gameplay. In multiplayer mode me and my friends do what we like to call Car Wars. By crashing the cars in avalable levels that can support cars into each other we try to see how high the cars can jump into the air. This is a lot of fun with rocket guns because the cars can't be damaged.Sound Could use some better music. Other than that it is great.Gameplay The gameplay is great, needless to say. The fact that many players can play the game itself is helpful because you can get their imput without fighting over the conntroler.Would you like to Comment? Outside of the usual and obvious factors of graphics, sound, and gameplay, Halo offers an interesting and intense plot that gives purpose to your missions. It's an impressevely well-balanced game. There is a fair variety in weapons and enemies strategically placed throughout the entire game. The weapons all have strengths and weaknesses, and compensate well for one another. The game limits you to caryying only 2 weapons; an interesting twist that most FPS games don't offer, but forces you to budget your ammo and think ahead for the situations that you anticipate you may be engaging.Weapons are logically placed as well. You won't find a stray gun or med pack without some logical explanation for its placement. For example, you may stumble upon a fallen comrade and pick up an extra clip or grenade, also giving you the opportunity to switch weapons, if he was carrying something that may have suited the situation better than what you are currently toting. Both the enemy and friendly AI is stunning. Your troops will flank enemies when you are laying down cover-fire, or request cover-fire if they need it. If they can see you are moving in for a kill, they'll cover you. They're also smart enough to jump out of the way of your fire, or duck under it. If they throw a grenade, they'll call it out to the team. The smart team-mates don't come without a consequence: the enemy is every bit as cunning. Enemies will also duck under your fire, hit you in the face to blur your vision so they can drop a grenade by you and run. Sometimes, enemies will die clutching a grenade. As they fall, the grenade will engage and as you run by their dead bodies, it'll detonate. Vehicles add another nice perspective to the game that many other FPS games don't offer. You can pilot several different vehicles. Friendly soldiers will often come with you in your vehicles, firing at enemies as you drive past. As the game progresses, the plot takes a few twists, and the degree of difficulty increases. If multi-player is your thing, Halo has kept you in mind. There are several different multi-player modes, all of which are customizable and can be saved for later play. Sound The sound is also top-notch. The game supports surround-sound. The ambient sounds are impressive, as are all of the incidental and regular sounds. You'll hear a large variety of extra phrases which your comrades will utter... everything from taunts to combat commands, as well as panic-struck utterances.Sound is an element in most media that goes unnoticed, unless it's bad. Chances are very good that you won't even notice the sound in Halo. Gameplay The controls are easy to learn. It may take PC gamers a little wihle to get used to playing with a controller, rather than a mouse, but in time, the controls will feel comfortable. The levels are well-designed and take you in and out of doors often. The level design makes good use of real-estate in that the plot may force you to cover ground you've already been over later in the game, but you'll find that the second time through will present new challenges and goals, such that the level may look familiar, but feel quite a bit different. Vehicles are easy to control, once you understand how they work. They all pilot similarly. Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Rating Reviewed By Pissed of about bad reviewsFrom Area 51 Review Date 01/03/2003 Overall Rating ![]() 5 of 5 Rate this review? Summary One of the main reasons why I am posting this summarry is so I can clear up a few things concerning the other reviews. First of all, the reason why you are only able to hold 2 guns is for the sake of REALISM. In real life, its almost impossibles to hold more than two guns. If Bungie had made it so you could hold as many as you want then everyone would be whining about how it was so unrealistic. Overall this game is top notch, i also own a PS2 and i have to say, as a faithful Sony customer I was very impressed. The only reason why i bought the X-Box was for Halo.(Although now i am happy I bought it for the new release of Splinter Cell)Sound Sound is great. Nothing much else to say.Gameplay Gameplay is supperb to say at the least. Ingenious level design. The people saying that the levels are very repetitive are very much blowing the problem out of purportion. The few parts that are repetitive do not affect the gameplay at all and I don't see how it could hurt their gaming experience so much and this very small problem does not merit lowering the overall score 1 point.Would you like to Comment? But pretty good if you must know.Gameplay If this game is one of the best games of all-time then gameplay is obviously very addicting. Don't listen to all those ass-holes the say its bad. I mean no one cares if there is a variety of weapons, just as long as you are having fun shooting the crap out of the bad guys. Summary This is probably the best game i've ever had, for any console/system/computer. The fact that it has an awesome multiplayer option will keep you coming back for more. Your definitly gonna need to buy a couple more controllers or find friends with their own. This is a good investment, and with Halo 2 coming out in a couple months, I can't wait to try it online/multiplayer! the little Flood looking beasties that run around and jump on you were also the most irritating ive ever experienced. but i guess it adds to the playSound Sound was perfect, it fit the game to every detail, it would change so unoticibly it would go from "ahhuhhahhhoooahhh" to "duh duh duh duhduh" and my heart would race as i saw the flood coming after me, but them with my trusty shotgun i would blow limbs off, then feel a sigh of relief when it thumped to the ground. also the screams and yells of the Covenant were great and sounded so real. put that on surround......Gameplay Fantastic, but a bit repetitive if your not an FPS enthusiast. The computer AI is very advanced, i notice that if im in a dark corner or hallway, the enemy will walk right by without noticing me, but if i turn on my flashlight or move around or out, they will notice me, and come after me. also, watching the enemy fight the enemy-Flood.VS.Covenant- was spectacular, and vehicle manuevering was spectacular as well.Would you like to Comment? It begins with you being unfreezed and finding out that your ship is completely overrunned with aliens!!! You have to fight youe way through many attacks throughout the entire game and it gets cooler and cooler!. Once you start playing this game you won't be able to stop!!! I recommendthis game to everyone!!!Sound Sound is awesome!! They have suspense music, triumphant music and even a bit of rock music!!! You hear your gun fire, people talking, your footsteps and tons more sound effects!!! The sound couldn't be any better!Gameplay Gameplay is pretty straight forward. Once you kniow how to shoot, to reload, look around, duck, and jump. The game can be extremely hard or it could be easy. You get to pick your skill level! I ahve owned this game for awhile and I feel that there is nothing wronge with the gameplay!Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary This game is now the number one game in my all time best games list. Everything about the game is so nicely done, there is almost no mistake. From the second you boot the game, it sucks you in and never lets out.Sound Excellent soundtrack, excellent sound effects, excellent voice acting, excellent covenant screams, yells and everythings. This game is THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME in my book. Gameplay The best fps controls I have ever played including pc fps games. Everthing is so spot on. The fact that you can only carry 2 guns at a time adds so much depth to the game you won't believe before you play. I constantly found myself standing and thinking about what guns to carry and what to drop. The gameplay consist of different elements so it never gets boring. i.e. you run around in first person shooting covenants for a while, and then you start driving a vehicle and then shooting again and then flying some type of a vehicle and so on. Excellent A.I., just play to see why. Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. |
