Summary

When this game first came out I was excited because a portable Mario Kart sounded like fun and it was 10 dollars less than everything else on the market (probably because Nintendo made it themselves). It was a lot better than Mario Kart 64, which was WAY too easy, and had great graphics. I really liked the fact that after you beat all of the new tracks in the game you could play the old tracks from Super Mario Kart for the SNES. However, I felt there were some gameplay issues that took away from this game(like the controls), and the multiplayer wasn't really as enjoyable as it should be (but it's better than nothing). Overall, it's a good game that met my expectations when I first played, but it got very boring and repetitive and the sloppy gameplay made me want to throw my GBA out the window sometimes. You won't touch this game for a long time after you've owned it for a while.

Sound

The sound is pretty good. The music is great, but it can get repetitive and annoying. If you don't like it you can just turn it off. You can hear characters voices in the race, when they pass someone or hit someone with an item. That also gets annoying, but it's not too bad. The rest of the sound affects are pretty good. Overall, the sound is good, but not great.

Gameplay

I was glad that this was NOT a port from the SNES Mario Kart, as it had original levels, but that you could also unlock the SNES levels too. However, if you play this game enough you will get so mad at it that you won't want to spend time unlocking them. The controls are simple and you should learn them right away, but the way your character moves around on the screen based on your controls is terrible. If you don't time your turns at the exact millo second, at least 60% of the time you would not make the turn. Holding The "R" button can be used to slide turn which can help, but sometimes it really isn't useful and is annoying when it makes you jump instead of pull a slide turn. Sometimes you just want to break, turn yourself around, and go again. It gets very frustrating, especially on certain levels. I also hate how if you don't have any coins you go spinning if you hit anyone, and it's hard not to hit anyone on the narrow track. The multiplayer is ok, but only if everyone has the game. The one cartridge multiplayer stinks. First, everyone has to be Yoshi, one of the WORST turners in the game (I'm not kidding, I got STUCK in corners with him before) and you only get four tracks from the original SNES. I would have sacrificed half of the tracks for at least a couple different characters. Both multiplayers aren't very competitive, but the battle mode in multi pak is pretty fun. Overall, the gameplay is average with several problems.

Summary

Ok, lets talk gba racing. You got general racetrack, hovercrafts, ect. But when when you got the worlds favorite Peach saving, Yoshi riding, Bowser beating Mario combined with a Go- kart, this isn't a regular game. Nintendo first looked into this idea back in the 16 bit days, while the Genesis was pumping up the hill in a new high-quality steamer with happy customers, and the doomed turbografx 16 in a bike still with training wheels eating dirt. The Super Nintendo, Which would soon be famous, was that I-think-I-can blue train, chugging with all of it's might trying to get up that steep hill of competition, the public's taste and bitter "I want that now I want that" attitude. What the Super Nintendo needed is a knock-out game, a game that would change gaming for years to come, a game that would just clinch that genesis and say to the public, "sure, its got sonic, but look what iv'e got!" feeling. The super Nintendo had a key lineup of games that would eventually doom the genesis just like the turbografx 16. Those Games were the Super Mario series, the Super Street fighter series, and yes, the moment we've all been waiting for, the start of a new revolation, SUPER MARIO KART! One of Nintendo's successes in the gaming industry that would tear that ol' genesis to bits. This title was not taken lightly. The desighners and producers needed a game that the bublic would buy. Maybe a bowser game, no, not enough power to get in sales. A yoshi adventure? Hmm, that is a possibility. Over some hard thinking, playing the Super Nintendo to find that missing puzzle peace, and staying up all night beleiving and hoping an ideo would pop into their brains, they got it. A game featuring all the mario crew. It be a sucess for sure. It'd have to be centered around mario so the public will buy anything mario realated, and would need a catagory to comply it with. Role-playing, too boring, Action, already have a lot of those games, puzzle, no, racing, hmmm. There were a few good racing titles, but none had the effect that Nintendo was about to spurce. Not car realtated, something fun, hmm, bikes? No, scooters? no, ah. Go-karts. Yes! A mario go kart game! Super mario and friends go-kart, no too long. Short And simple. Super Mario kart. Good. Start Desighning next week, 10 o' clock sharp people go go go!

Yes, that commotion in the Nintendo building was something to celebrate. This Game picks up from the snes version using coins, which is fun all its own. What if there wasn't and Mario Kart 64? What would clinch the nintendo 64's racing gener's success? And now, roughly a decade later, Mario Kart Super Curcuit carries on that jubalation the the Nintendo office that night.

Sound

The sound is done surprisingly well. It goes with every track, is full and crisp. There are many toons to this game, each catchy in it's own way. The sound effects from running in to walls or being hit by a red shells are right on target, and produce a corkscrew affect when hit by a shell or anything else. Overall, the sound is ripe and crisp. No glitches here.

Gameplay

One of the more important areas of the game, Mario Karts' gamplay isn't shabby at all. There are 3 modes of play, Mario Gp, Quick run, And time trial. Mario Gp is basicly a career mode, Time trial is to set your records and time yourself. Quck run lives up to its name when all you do is a one-time race.

The gp part actually is better than predicted. There are 5 race competition per cc, (50, 100, or 150cc, all getting higher in difficulty level.) The last one is the special track, which is unlockable after completing a competition. There are 4 traks per competition, each in its detailed and unique textures and enviroments. Now onto racing. There are 8 characters to choose from, and are rated on speed and weight. Included are, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Dk, Wario, and Bowser. There is also a random choice. After this option, you choose your difficulty level, 50, 100, or 150 cc, and then the racing begins.
First off, you begin in eighth place. The trumpet sounds, and the red light flashes. Yellow. Green! Rev up some speed on that go kart. The gameplay in this game is alot like the 64 version, and its ancester, Super Mario Kart. If you own all of these games, its a little like a chain weaving around, some new features added, but most are the same. What is really cool is that you can actully unlock the Super Mario Kart tracks from the original AND the Mario Kart 64 Tracks. Cool? yep. It gives you a taste of all the super go kart games, and you only need one system.
As you start the race, you encounter the "magic Blocks" that give you power ups, just like the past versions. The enviro ment and scrolling veiws are spectacular, from the icy snow to rainbow road. Above all, the cpu's intelligence against everything you do is mind-boggleing. How does Nintendo do it? Every action I make, the character nexts to me reacts. Spellbinding. Alien technology, perhaps. the only thing that glitches a tiny bit is turning. Once you play this game for a long time, you'll get used to it, but for new time players, this is pretty hard. There are techniques out there, like pressing the a button repededly, otherwise, you'll just have to play it for a long time to get used to it.
The Gameplay is a big feature needed to succeed in this game, and it is executed nicely. Bravo.
