Summary the Two Towers was a fantastic game, and the Return of the King is nothing less. you get a lot more characters to play as like Sam, Frodo, and even Gandalf. but for some reason I thought that it didn't bring as much joy playing it as the Two Towers did, even though you have more characters, but that's just not enough.Sound great sounds, with the blades hitting each other and arrows flying everywhere. good voiceovers too.Gameplay great L.O.T.R fights and minigames that you will play every once and a while. the A.I of the orks aren't to great, but i really didn't care at the time.Would you like to Comment? I paid $8 for this game, used, at EB! I was kinda shocked it was so cheap, wondered if it was worth a flip. Guy in the store said he had it on Xbox I think and said how good it was. So I thought, for $8, I can try it, it looks great on the box. So this game review will be my first impression for my first few hours of play.Sound Identical to the movie, including voices. Some of the music gets you really into the battle, with the horns and drums. I really get into the fighting big time, and the graphics and detail just make it seem almost like you're basically playing the movie. Sound is clear, loud and straight from the movie, every last bit, down to the annoying Smeegul.Gameplay It would have been so excellent to have had EA include part 1 and 2 from the movie, and make you play through the WHOLE trilogy. It'd probably be several dozens of hours of gameplay! But this is based on the 3rd movie, of course. The gameplay is sort of Gauntlet style, if anyone remembers that game. A 3rd person view, as well. I must say, the controls were made for Xbox players, and in the game on PC you can use your controller and analog sticks if it has any. I chose to use keyboard and mouse. A lot of attack moves are here, and I wish I had another 5 button mouse again! It'd come in handy, trust me. The gameplay follows the movie, anyhow, and during the real scenes from the movie in-game, it suddenly blends into the game itself. The very beginning of the game is great, it really makes an impact and sets the plot for the whole game, being from the movie of course. So far, the game play SHOULD have worked a lil bit more like, say, GTA Vice City, where you can use the mouse to turn as you run. But, the control, after getting used to it, ends up being fine. The camera angles take some getting used to however, sometimes you get backed into a corner at a distance, and you cant see what the heck you're doin! Lastly, the way the game levels progress, and the weird upgrade system, is confusing for quite a while to start, and pulling of special moves via mouse and keyboard can be awkward quite a bit until you played for a few hours and gotten used to it.Would you like to Comment? Summary A game that lets the gamer play as characters from the movie, Such as Aragorn of Legolas. Battle your way through hordes of Orcs and other things.Sound Sounds like they just took a crappy recording from the movie.Gameplay Alright on one player. Nice controls, except for the Physical attack, ctrl is a pain to reach. With your pinky. Makes on level difficult to play. Co-op just plain sucks. Not worth playing for too long.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Fans of the Trilogy, rejoice, you'll be able to immerse yourself in the epic cinematic conclusion. The game offers the possibility to step into ANY of the known heroes, from Gandalf to Gimli, via Frodo,or Legolas, and Aragorn, faithfully reproducing the awe inspiring grandeur of the movie. The game follows EXACTLY the movie's plot, and each playable character's branching path is based on their narrated historic adventure.Sound The music straight from the movie is professionally done and "present " where it is needed. Voice acting is done in the movie's studios by the SAME actors, adding an unparalleled dramatic quality to the mix, punctuated by Gandalf's voice overs, his discourses with Saruman are inimitable and rewarding. The FX sound(EAX setting) is positioned perfectly, with no glithches, and from time to time, the NPC's vocal prompts help steer the player to the right direction, naturally. The whole sound is top notch.Gameplay The game's engine is very robust, without any visible stutters or pauses even when the action get frantic, with myriads of foes and monsters on the screen. True to the movie's rich source, the game offers EACH playable hero tailored to the likeness of the actors, including specifically recorded voice-overs,and it pulls it off so successfully, that when it blends movie footage with spectacular action, even when the footage ends and gracefully slides to the game engine, focusing on the chosen playable hero, the transition is visually credible, even when it zooms to a close-up. Unfortunately those cinematic tricks, and the movie's rich lore of visuals CANNOT,make up for the horrible (PC) controls, that make the game unplayable, the camera angles and the scripted path, compound the frustration, where your little valiant hero jerks hastily, along the beautiful 2D (it feels like it)environment. The camera angle is not only fixed to the "consoley" horizontal axis,it is ALSO restrictive in the fact that unless a specific foe is killed,it does not let you pan around to "see" or approach anything else! Additionally, the "porters",who worked minimally on the PC controls conversion, kept the auto-aim (no choice to disable)for the ranged weapons! What is really bad is that when you aim a ranged weapon somewhere, the player just jerks from closer to furthest foe, without any movement arc or even in-between choice!! To top it off, since the game's licence is bound by the movie's/book's plot, each character has a restricted pre-defined adventure path/story,regarding a particular plot path,no variety there. Each character HAS to finish the path's chapters, get level-up aquire/allocate skills etc,in order to ultimately unlock the adjacent character,WITHIN this plot-path,starting anew at level one with each new hero choice. Then you are given another plot path to follow where the process has to be repeated. The good part is that there are unlockable characters and bonus levels, the bad part is that it is confusing, and a bit frustrating since at each new plot branching you HAVE to restart the new hero at level 1. Additionally, once each level is over, and you can mercifully save(no where else!!),you are presented with a convoluted symbolic screen that offers on the same tree, confusing choices between each path, movie footage, interviews,or game art(!!?) Like mentioned before the lack of ANY in level saves makes the whole gameplay really disagreable since it is coupled with the horrible confining movement and controls. All in all,for the PC this game "FEELS" like rather an INTERACTIVE CINEMATIC experience with LOTS of action, than a "real" PC game. I am sticking with it though for the movie "visuals". That's a first!Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member.
