Summary First I'll start with a comment to set the other reviews straight the game is a simulation it is only meant to appeal to a certian audience. That's what simulators do. This game is good if you always wanted to be invovled with trains. Nut as they to said it can become frustrating or even boring unless you are a lover of trains. Now for the fat price on it you'd better be a lover of trains because other wise you'll end up dissapointed.Sound The sound is good from the start but after some hours of play you may want to get your C.D. player and listen to some tunes as you play the game because ther really isn't anything to listen to some the sounds can get old sometimes.Gameplay The gameplay is as real as it can get away from the real world. The game has a multitude of things to do from constructing trains in a train yard to running steam engine in the europena country. If you buy the game and you decide you want to do more go to a store such as Electronique Bontique or Gamestop The should have many add ons for routes and trains, or even scenery. This game is huge to a certain extinct I'm not going to say it can out do it' brothers / Sisters the Microsoft Flight Simulator series. Microsoft has a lot of improve ments to make for a second release of this game if they make one.Would you like to Comment? It IS a simulator, much like MS Flight Simulator. There are no goals other than running the train, dropping off consists at appropriate locations, and doing this in a timely manner while staying within the rules of the road. Most disappointing was with everything Microsoft put into the game, they left out one item that would have improved the game. THERE ARE NO PEOPLE! It comes across as very empty, almost apocolyptic in it's presentation. You can move thousands of tons of cargo from point A to point B but why? No one's there to receive it. You can even "ride" your train, and look at the very EMPTY passenger car. Yes, you can run this simulator like a model railroad using your imagination to fill in the blanks but even model railroading has simulated people! Sound Weak. The sound simulations are inconsistant. Outside the train you'd expect to hear the horn and bells loud and clear (NOT). While the thrumming of the diesel and the chuffing of the steam is realistic and syncronized nicely the volume needs to be cranked up when observing from outside. DO NOT FORGET to turn the volume back down BEFORE going to internal views.Gameplay Technically this simulator is quite accurate, to a fault. Unless you're an Engineer (Railroad type) and are familiar with the rules of the road you can lose control of the train quickly and derail. Heaven forbid you take a turnout and end up facing the end of the track doing more than 30mph! Yes, braking is also realistic. It can take over a mile to stop a short train doing more than 30.Generating your own route is possible but very very tedious and extremely complex. If you have less than 128M RAM and less than 600Mhz processing speed don't even bother. My 1.4GHz/512MB RAM bogs down with the terrain editor. Even a very short line (20 miles or less) can take up to a week to process and label. You're better off hiring a programmer to do this for you with all the time it takes. Would you like to Comment? Summary True meaning of a "Sleeper." ZZZZZZZZZZ.Granted it was interesting learning how a train operates, but after the initial excitement wears off you are left with a hollow... How much did I pay for this game? Feeling. I love trains and always wanted to be an engineer. I wish that this game had come out when I was much younger, for it would have taught me that I was right in choosing a more exciting career in as a clerical worker in supply. The Graphics are good, but limited in scope, and the areas of operation could have been beter. I recommend you wait for the sale, or if perhaps there are some add-ons for moe exciting operations and locations. Try the Pacific Surf liner or the route of the Coast Starlight. But the fun's limited if your patience is very low. This game can be boring, because you have to ride on the train for a whole hour, and there's nothing to do.Sound The sound is not exactly good, or bad either. In fact, it just sits on 'OK'. The sound can be boring, and I hate the horn/bell when the horn sounds. You have to turn the bell off yourself sometimes, and that can be annoying, especially if you are worrying about other things.Gameplay The controls can be confusing, and you might need the manual everytime you play it. As I said, it can get boring. Other than that, it is fine.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Nice train wreck physics!!Sound Good sound, but I don't have a fancy sound card yet. Probably better than I know.Gameplay Drive a train around, basically you just control the speed of the train....and watch the scenery go by to be truthful. Quite a few trains to choose from.Would you like to Comment? Join VideoGameReview for a free account, or Login if you are already a member. Summary Microsoft Train Simulator is somewhat an Over-rated game, though the game takes advantage of its flawless graphics....Microsoft forgot about a Flightsim and went for the first Train Simulator, a good idea, but im afraid this game will on please a small audience...If you are not a fan of trains and your'e just wandering what its like, i reccomend you dont pay the hefty price...its a risk that i have regreted taking, an Over-rated game, only enjoyed by a certain audience.Sound The sound was pretty good, though i found the bells to be annyoing and sometimes they woukd repeat for nothing, though when driving through Austria you travel in an old train, and the interior is so delighting, they play some great poshy music, and looking out of the windows, you can hear the cows MOO.....The sound was very good, but still quiet far from perfect, i wanted more surround and im sure you do to.This game wasn't for me...But it just MIGHT be for you!Gameplay The gameplay was the biggest down-side of the game, its not TERRIBLE but it isnt FANTASTIC either, you get to ride quiet a few trains, some historic too...A nice feel to it, though one thing that really rids the game of realism is that there are no people in the game, you do not see ANYBODY, you are at an empty train-station, yet you still pick up passengers, there are some routes and adventures to do, but once they're tried, the game gets tired..Pretty fast!Would you like to Comment?
