Combat Flight Simulator 3 Battle for Europe for Windows Videos >>
Summary Decent WWII Ariel Combat Simulator. This sim will engage you in intercept, dog-fighting, bombing and ground attack. You will have the option of flying for the US, UK or Luftwaffe in WWII Europe in an impressive selection of stock aircraft. Terrain and ground objects are plenty as are "targets of opportunity".Sound Sound was good. Turn up the bass on your surround and feel the guns & engine rattle your seat. Different sound packages for different aircraft, not very many generic sounds, well done. Good movement of sound through my surround speakers.Gameplay Flight physics and AI are well done. Damage effects are well done. I enjoy being able to man a Gunner's position in the various bombers or fly different types of missions (intercept, ground attack, bombing, etc.) Many options. The only problem is I can barely run it on my system. I'm running XP pro on a decent set-up and have never had any program stall my XP to the point where it automatically restarts! That is until i bought CFS3. Even with a full install and graphics set to a near minimum with a geforce4 w/ DirectX 9 I still get slow/choppy frame rates and a jagged horizon! Not to mention if you throw a couple of effects like a smoke trail, tracers or flak it will turn into a slide show. The only reason I ignored all the other reviews and bought this game is because of my affection for FS2002 and CFS2. I was hoping this game would be designed for the masses with decent gaming systems to run instead of the high end computers only. 3rd party mods are availible but still limited. At least you can fix that muddy water! Multiplayer is decent but not an improvement over CFS2. Would you like to Comment? Summary In a few words, utterly abysmal. I can't believe I was actually waiting on tenterhooks for this to come out. Very poor in all respects especially the supertanker style flight characteristics. Pay good money for this and Microsoft will be laughing all the way to the hangar. I guarantee you won't beSound Standard bang noises. Hint to programmers; it may be worth actually seeing some WWII fighters in action, just so you know what you missed. Alternatively put on IL2 again, (no I'm not being paid by them, would be nice though!) and crank up the volume.Gameplay I can't, this game really does need taking out round the back of your house and being put out of it's (and mine) misery.Would you like to Comment? Summary One word: disappointmentIf you don't have it, purchase Il2 Sturmovik instead of this game: it's better, funnier and cheaper...I can't really understand the reviews here claiming that cfs3 is better than IL2, probably those were posted by Microsoft people ;-), since IL2 is really MUCH better in all aspects. I've played cfs1 and 2 and those were great simulations at the time they were released, so I expected something like that....but, after having played IL2 for months I bought cfs3 and I couldn't believe what i was seeing...I had read the first reviews and they were quite encouraging (what game were those guys playing?Definitely, it wasn't the version i got!), but after a few hours struggling this thing, I came to the conclusion I had been fooled. Even if Il2 didn't exist, cfs3 would be just a poor cfs2 sequel. It seems as if Microsoft had released a half-cooked game, just to make money, without any consideration for gamers. It's sad to say this, because I expected much more...let's wait for cfs4!...in the meantime, play IL2 and Forgotten Battles Sound Average. It was very disappointing to hear the same cfs2 weapon sounds in this game!!!!Definitely poorer than Il2Gameplay gameplay is really terrible. You don't have the feeling of being part of an ongoing war and the whole game lacks the atmosphere of cfs2 or Il2. Controls are quite awkward and I have the impression the flight models are not very realistic....anyway, the point is that this game is quite boring, but not because the lack of action, but because you have the feeling you're not really there. As a flight simulator is more realistic than cfs2, but worse than Il2 (and I'm not only talking about flight models). I can also mention that there's an interactive campaign (nice feature). But the whole game experience is hindered by the huge system resources needed: even it were an outstanding game, I couldn't play it correctly, since it seems you need a supercomputer to run this thing!.frame rates are therefore very very poor on average machines.Would you like to Comment? The campaign options are nice, but the missions quickly become very repetitive. The graphics are okay, but nothing to write home about. Which is understandable to a certain extent since the game can be played online, but even the with the weak graphics the game stutters a lot; especially with weather conditions present. My recommendation would be to wait until this one hits the clearance rack and then buy it. Sound Okay sound. Is choppy at times though.Gameplay The cockpit: No instrumentation is visible unless you look down, yet the bottom half or more of the screen is obscured by the cockpit. Realistic maybe, but doesn't lend itself to good gameplay. The commands: All the commands were easy to learn and the keystokes relatively intuitive. The campaign: One word: REPETITIVE. In the Fortress Europe campaign the front line sectors are in the English channel. As a fighter pilot, you make ship attack after ship attack...after ship attack. After about the third shipping attack, you are bored. While the idea behind the roleplaying in the campaign is nice...you can build up a pilot's career...it is poorly implemented. There is not cut-scene to show you pilot being awarded that purple heart or getting his new bars pinned on. It's just a bunch or stats and a display panel of awards. Nothing like the old Microprose games I knew and loved. Overall, I was disappointed with the gameplay. Would you like to Comment? Summary From the promotional movie to the package's graphics, you are led to expect great things. Unfortunately, CFS3 is less impressive than even the first version of this game (which in my opinion was very good). I have a good computer setup, and other games work great, but this was both difficult to setup and gave me a terrible frame rate (after spending time trying all sorts of combinations of graphic quality and resolution). Microsoft did an awesome job with FS2002, but it's as if CFS3 was done by an entirely different company. Microsoft is grossly misleading the consumer by how they present this game on their web site and with their packaging. I am a big fan of the first CFS, but this version is a big step backward.Sound So so. No big noticeable differences from the earlier versions. The chatter among pilots is pretty limited. Guns, explosions, etc. are about what you'd expect. It sounds fine, but no big enhancements. Quite frankly, other than getting our money, I'm not sure why Microsoft bothered coming out with this new version. It was very disappoiniting on all counts.Gameplay The planes do not respond nearly as well as those in FS2002, making it difficult to fly in dogfights and strafing. The cockpit view only shows a portion of the flight panel, so you're either guessing on things like speed and altitude, or you have to rely on the heads-up view.Would you like to Comment?
